I've also wondered if he's indeed any good. I know he played some good football against us, but that's pretty much the only promising thing I've seen him do. I just hear constantly that he's an excellent player, but I struggle to see any evidence of that. Like Robertson, Fabinho etc I'm sure he'll be fine and we do take a while to incorporate certain signings but with the others where we'd seen suggestions they would be good, Taki's case it's slightly more difficult. Although he's hardly played, so no biggie. If it doesn't work out after next season, we'll no doubt triple our investment regardless.

One thing is clear, Haaland was the star of that Salzburg team. Not that he would have fit into our team.

I think Minamino will come good, even if he doesn't we'll still turn a profit on him. Nowt to worry about.

The term is a contraction of Nippon, similar to Brit being a contraction of British, and I was unaware of it being a racist term, except maybe during the war, when I'm sure it wasn't used in an affectionate manner.

(TBH, I did google the term after I made the post out of curiosity, and I would probably not choose to use it again, and I'm sorry if I offended anyone of Japanese heritage.)

I've worked in Asia a fair amount, and was married to a Chinese lady for 12 years. Generally Asian people don't seem particularly bothered by terms such as these (Trust me, they have plenty of terms for westerners, which focus on physical differences such as nose sizes ) so I'm more atuned to East Asian cultures than the average bear, and have many friends from that area, so I hardly think that I'm racist...

But you're free to call me racist if you like, similar to me being free to call you a bellend if I think it appropriate

Mate, I don't want to fill up this thread on irrelevant stuff, and I don't disagree with your previous post.
I'm not trying to suggest that I couldn't possibly be racist because of xy or z. I just know that I'm secure in how I deal with people of whatever colour or creed... I'll only 'judge' the person, not where their ancestors come from.
Personally I find being submerged in other cultures teaches me a lot that I wouldn't find if I stayed in my own backyard.

But it seems to be the norm to try and accuse people for using language that maybe isn't acceptable in these brave new times, but isn't said with any malice... And personally, I would rather focus attention on the ones that still actively discriminate (or use language with malice intended) on whatever grounds, without knowing the person...

In my younger years, I went on rallies against the national front.
I do take offence at being accused as a racist, as I've lived my whole life actively embracing all humans that are nice people...

But in football terms, we're allowed to say how we hate man u fans... they do this or that... or man city fans are just glory hunters fuelled by middle east money... Isn't that equally 'racist' in the modern definition?

Anyway, This is just derailing the thread... For what it's worth, I think Minamino could be like a Luis Garcia type player, without a fixed position, but tricky and unpredictable

TBH it was the first time I'd opened this thread in a while and saw the "nippy" comment but not the time posted.

I stand by my point though, it's a racist slur.

As for shortening of the word Nippon much like Brit for British, I guess its ok to call someone from Pakistan a p*ki then too?

As for the language not being acceptable in these "brave new times" it's never been acceptable in my lifetime and I'm 44.

I noticed that when watching cricket from Oz a year or two back. I was a bit surprised to hear the commentators refer to the Pakistani players like that to be honest, but clearly it's an abbreviation without negative connotations down under.
