As nice as that is, it's not as they're facing a future of destitution, why not donate it to grassroots football in Portugal in their honour?

May not be popular but that was my first response as well. Nice intention but better destinations for that dirty money.

Yeah - I actually thought this also. It’s a lovely gesture, but the family are already multi-millionaires.

Dioga's family probably are but Andre's may not be as he played to a lower level.

I am sure there is enough in Jota's remaining contract to look after both families for a long time.

It's an odd thing for Chelsea to do. Maybe PSG should also give their prize money from Supercup. Maybe Gary Speed's family should have got some of it.

I think it's actually put the family in a strange position... suspect they will feel they don't deserve it and won't know how to react.

In that case they could say thank you and ask for the money to be put towards charities etc.

Whilst I am sure Jota's contract and insurance would come to enough to look after both families and then some, then you get the position of Andre's family maybe feeling like they are getting Diogo's money and that their own loss is somehow worth (not in a monetary way ) less if that makes sense.

For me it is a really nice gesture by the Chelsea players and it is up to the receiving families to react anyway they like or do what they like with the money. There are no wrong ways to any of it imo.

Another thing to look at is the fact that most of us on here come from very different worlds to footballers and their kin, so to them this could all be simply seen as a "looking after our own" type situation by all involved sides.

James Milner messaged Diogo Jota the night before he died. The former #LFC vice-captain has opened up how much the Portuguese means to him.

️ “Nothing major, just checking in and asking each other how things were going... Someone asked, ‘Is that true?’ and I didn’t know at that point. I messaged someone at Liverpool to try to find out and… just horrific. Not many tougher days than that.

️ “I loved the guy, absolutely loved him. Loved him as a player, loved him even more as a team-mate and a friend, absolutely loved him. Carlos (Baleba) wanted to change his number, so the No 20 became available and it felt like the right thing for me to do. Every day when I put my kit on, I’ll think of him.

️ “We were only together at Liverpool for three seasons and you might not have thought we had much in common — different nationalities, very different ages — but we hit it off immediately. Maybe it was because we were both so stubborn. Honestly, people say I’m stubborn, but Jots could give me a run for my money.

️ “He was an unbelievable guy, one of my favourite team-mates I’ve had in all my time playing. He was always up for a laugh, always winding people up. He was one of those you could put in any corner of the dressing room, next to any other player, and he would click with them straight away.”
