    Luger dies in horror crash
Georgian athlete Nodar Kumaritashvili killed in training accident

Tragedy struck the Winter Olympics just hours before the opening ceremony in Vancouver, as Georgian luge hopeful Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed following a horror crash.

The 21-year-old Olympian was having his second practice run when he suffered a horrific 90mph crash that saw him fly off the track and collide with a metal pole at the Whistler Sliding Centre during his second training run.

According to reporters at the scene, Kumaritashvili struck a steel pole near the finish after losing control of his sled on the final turn and clearing the ice-coated wall along the side of the track.

Kumaritashvili needed emergency CPR resuscitation treatment at the scene and was unconscious when being placed on a stretcher and rushed away towards an air ambulance.

"Our first thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the athlete," said IOC president Jacques Rogge.

"The whole Olympic Family is struck by this tragedy which clearly casts a shadow over these Games."

Vancouver Games chief John Furlong also spoke in a joint statement with the IOC and the International Luge Federation.

"We are deeply struck by this tragedy and join the IOC in extending our condolences to the family, friends and team mates of this athletes, who came to Vancouver to follow his Olympic dream," read the statement.

The IOC said doctors tried to revive Kumaritashvili in hospital, and added that an inquiry into his death would be launched.

"This is a terrible accident. This is the very gravest thing that can happen in sport, and our thoughts and those of the 'luge family', are naturally with those touched by this event," added International Luge Federation President Josef Fendt.

The Georgian National Olympic Committee later confirmed their seven athletes would compete at the Games and, at the opening cermony later on Friday, the Georgian flag included a black fringe and their team members wore black stripes as a mark of respect.

    RIP

    Men's downhill postponed
First Alpine event at Winter Olympics postponed due to weather

The troubled Vancouver Olympics continued to be hit with bad news on Saturday, as the men's downhill skiing event was postponed due to the continuing unsuitable weather.

Rain and high temperatures have made the course too slushy for racers to ski down, meaning the opening Alpine event of the 2010 Winter Olympics must take place another time.

The women's super-combined event due to be held on Sunday was already postponed on Friday, and now the opening men's event has been shelved with no new date yet released, but they will most probably try for Monday.

The build-up to the Games had been plagued by poor weather, with rain, fog and high temperatures causing a slushy slope much too dangerous to race on.

Organisers have even had to ship in snow from higher ground as warm temperatures threaten to badly disrupt the Olympic schedule, and already they are two days behind in the skiing.

International Ski Federation race director Gunter Hujara said that the piste was unacceptable for high speed racing after yet more unsuitable weather.

"The piste has been badly affected these last two days by the mild temperatures and the humid conditions with snow and rain," Hujara said.

Conditions are expected to improve on Monday when officials will most probably try and get the men's downhill in progress, but it is more bad publicity that Vancouver chiefs could do without after a troubled and tragic start.

Not going well the start of these Olympics, there were reports yesterday that the cost of staging these games could already cost upto $3bn

That accident was so horrific, and I can't believe it was replayed on the news on CNN and the like

Bad wasn't it, i suppose that's one of the dangers of sliding down a bobsled track on essentially a tea tray. The Marshals were on the scene immediately though so they gave him the best chance of survival, it just wasn't to be.

Surely there will be some kind of safety measures on that corner now, some sort of padding on the metal girders would be a start. Quite how much protection they would provide at 90mph is another matter though

It's one of the fastest tracks in the world apparently. The BBC have quotes from a British guy, who is a top competitor, from months ago saying the competitors need to be allowed more access to the track in the run up to the games. He said it was dangerous, especially for the less experienced people and even that someone could get killed. Very prophetic.

Why? It's ****. I've tried to watch bits and bobs but it's all minority sports that no-one has an interest in, I don't see why I should feign interest just because it's the Olympics. I saw some figure skating the other day, and I all I could think of was what a mincer the fella looked.

Shaun White was a beast last night. His second run was just so sweet. I was in Park city over the New year and him and the rest of the Olympic halfpipe team were there. I took an hour off snowboarding just to watch him. It was sick he just nailed every run.
