Funnily enough I was talking about the same thing with my brother when we were watching the boxing highlights earlier. I think they stay amateur as it means they represent their country whereas if they turn pro they sort of go independent, which I assume the Cuban government don't really want?


Edit - quick Google search reveals that Castro banned all professional sport in 1962.

Went to the Brazil - South Korea semi-final football at Old Trafford last night. Great atmosphere, enjoyed the experience, seats were good (and expensive) but zero legroom. Worse than Anfield's Main Stand from memory.

Neymar didn't have his best game but he just oozes ability - easily the best Brazil player on the pitch.
