how long are the time trials you've just witnessed? The difference is just that it's an individual thing and it's the way it is when it's 1 v 1 in a race for 1st.

On the road it's the same thing when two riders have broken away and have to fight it out for 1st place. That's just the nature of cycling.

They should present the medals in a similar style to the race. 3 represenstatives from the IOL are assigned each of the medal-winning cyclists but they have to chase them around a circuit and catch them to stick the medals on them. A cross between tag and pin the tail on the donkey.
