The income generated from big events should be enough, although his promoter may have screwed him, I've heard of many cases where fighters don't even get to see the contract for their events. I remember Calzaghe wrote in his book that he was earning a pittance even after the Eubank fight, so it's actually very possible.
He's just such a despicable individual. Despite that, I don't think he's very well known in the sporting world outside of boxing. He's an average fighter, with a horrendous style. Other boxers with horrible styles have at least had some marketability or redeeming qualities, but there's not much in Fury's court. He'll fade into history and no on will remember him.
