I had Ward by a round.

Agree with Jaco about a rematch too, I think Ward would take it, probably wider.
The times they are a changin'.

I was wondering how the judges came to that conclusion and then low and behold I see that 2 of the judges gave Ward the last 6 rounds. I know scoring rounds is subjective but that is taking the biscuit. I don't care how knowledgeable people are on boxing, you're not going to convince me that from round 7 Ward won every round.
I had the same to be fair, although i struggled to call the final round (lack of sleep) and went for a straight draw as i found too many round too tight to call. But as that's bull**** justification, so i should have probably edged Ward meaning he'd have won every round of the last six for me.

The fight was close, so i don't think it falls into politics although a home crowd help edges a round.

Also, on the earlier point of Kovalev out landing Ward. By 10 shots. I'd hazard a guess he earned that margin in the first three rounds alone. And without sounding patronising, boxing is scored on rounds, so you can easily out land and still lose a fight comfortably.

Disappointing yank judges can't put aside their hate for Russia and score a fight properly, even Ward's interview after the fight practically agreed he was robbed. Even though Ward would probably win the rematch I still believe he'll do his best to try and wriggle out of fighting Kovalev again.

Ideal world sees Ward and Kovalev go again, and the winner then going after Stevenson as he is the lineal champion as well as holding the WBC belt.

Get those two fights in 2017 and we end up with one guy having the lineal title along with the WBA, IBF, WBC, and WBO belts.

Have a feeling that Stevenson is on Ward's radar as the lineal title is something that always meant a lot to him at Super middleweight, he has spoken at length on it in interviews etc., and suspect that he thinks that having all the belts and, more importantly the lineal title, for this division adds up to a legacy moment.

There is a rematch clause open to Kovalev though, so will be interesting to see if he is activating it straight away or if he will take a step aside fee. Methinks he will be taking option number one.

Don't think that the scoring was that far out, as it was a close fight and a fight that saw one fighter stand out in the first half and the other in the second half.

I do disagree with the scoring as I think the scores should have been flipped in favour of Kovalev, but there were a few rounds that were very tough to call and depending on how what a judge favoured, be it ring management, aggression, punches landed or just outright bias, then those particular rounds were up in the air and up for grabs.

If you want to bemoan the judging from last night then start with the chief support. Hooker got an absolute gift against Perez

And it is a similar clash of styles to Ward vs Kovalev. The guy who beats you by outboxing you vs the guy who beats you up and stops you.

                          30 years ago today.

I remember watching this with my Dad - I'm fairly certain ITV showed it the next day, the Sunday, and I was absolutely awestruck, possibly more awestruck than I've ever been. Made a huge impression on me as a 9 year old.

Yeah I remember watching that when I was about the same ago too - I think it was a Sunday watch. The crazy thing about it is that he's a 20 year old absolutely destroying a WBC champion. You could see Berbick there being full of bravado trying to go toe to toe - ridiculous. I remember there being beef about which one wore the black shorts - Tyson was fined from what I remember, as the champ was supposed to get the priority.

Tyson is the same age there as my skinny son now!

Amazing to watch Berbick's reaction when attempting to get up, the disdain his brain shows his body for not keeping him on his feet after getting half way up.

                              Awesome.

Tyson at his peak. 4 short years later and it was all gone.
