Good, he's gotten a free run for too long. He lost the first fight and several others, didn't deserve the rematch. I feel sorry for Golovkin though that he's lost money/time preparing for this.

Matthysse vs Pacquiao for the WBA regular/silver welterweight strap in July



Always been a bit of a fan of Matthysse. He is a fighter that is fun to watch and by heck can he fight.

He probably already has. His skills have declined drastically in these last 5 years and he's not the type of fighter who can really recreate himself. FYI he has only 'retired' once. It's not a case of retiring and coming back, but more if you're done or not. Ray Leonard had a million comebacks and he's in great shape. Pacquiao has had hard fights consecutively for years in addition to his advancing years means he isn't what he once was, but let's see maybe he can roll back the years. His recent performances have been tedious at best though. Despite being outboxed, he was decent in the Mayweather bout, but since then he hasn't looked great, although it could also be due to the quality of opposition being pretty mediocre themselves.

Freddie Roach won't be in the corner for this bout and his assistant, Buboy Fernandez will be his head trainer. I think that's a recipe for disaster.

I'm a big fan of Matthysse but he too is getting on and hasn't looked great in recent years and has been rather inactive. I didn't see his last fight but some of his others haven't been the best. It's a bit of a cross roads fight, which is unusual for a bout of this profile. Good chance that the loser may not be seen in the ring again.

I'm picking Matthysse to stop him in the latter rounds. On paper it could be a great fight.

Yeah Matthysse is well past his best, due to age and also the surgery he had on his eye. He was never an elite level welterweight and at 35 he may have lost more ability that the even older Pacquiao has, and it is not as though his body has been through the wars either. He was a lot slower in his two more recent fights.

But he also had hitting power and is one tough sob in the ring. Will be rooting for Matthysse to win and get a big scalp (even if it is in name only nowadays) on his record.

Also on the subject of last chance saloon, James DeGale has his rematch with Caleb Traux this weekend. It's slipped under the radar a bit. I think Degale is a really talented fighter and was probably the best super middleweight for some time. He was rushed back too soon from the bad injury. If he shows signs of the injury, ring rust, decline etc I don't think we'll see DeGale in the ring again either. He needs to win convincingly and show that he can throw hard punches with confidence in his shoulder. If he does that, there are some big fights in the pipeline, particularly the rematch with Groves, which I think he wins if he is at the level he was at a year ago.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission and Canelo Alvarez's team reached an adjudication agreement before Wednesday's hearing and it was adopted unanimously (5-0) by the commission: Canelo gets a one-year suspension, but because he has cooperated it is suspended to six months, as per the commission rules allow. He will eligible to fight Aug. 17, six months from the date of his first positive test. This means he can fight a rematch with middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin in September assuming GGG defeats substitute opponent Vanes Martirosyan on May 5.
