Yes that's the only thing I understood about it. I knew it was the quickest cumulative time. I just thought Cavendish - winning so many stages overall, being world champion and an apparent great of the sport - might've done a bit better than 142nd . I'm also curious why he was Wiggins' wind shield and drinks fetcher when he's world champion.

it's a team race really where you have a lead rider they all work to help win the tour de france overall i.e. Wiggins within that you'll have people that can win sprint stages (Cavendish) someone good in the mountains (Frome, Wiggins) time trialist (Frome, Wiggins) a young rider (going for the white jersey) some others that can also climb, sprint etc... the idea being to help your team leader to win the race overall, within that the riders such as Cav will go for stage wins. If you cross the line within a certain distance of each other you'll often be given the same time so if there is a sprint finish and the peleton finishes just behind them they'll be given the same time.

So you're trying to win on a few different levels - yellow - overall winner, polka dot - king of the mountains (there are check points you need to cross first to get points), green jersey - spints (much the same as the polka dot in terms of getting points - white jersey (best young rider in the overall classification then you've got the best team (best time overall from your best 3 riders of each day) and a few other random ones as well.

          Jesus!

It's more complicated than American football

          What is a peleton?

That seems ridiculous that they'd be given the same time in cases where one has clearly beaten the other?

          Apols for the no0bness...just interested

Also....all you chaps who are really into it - do you all cycle? I can't imagine being into it unless you ride yourself.

It's a fascinating sport. The tour de france is the greatest. Shame I wasn't able to watch it at all this season.

Peleton is the main group of cyclists.

It's a wierd one really, I get into it when le tour is on simply as it's so ****ing tactical to win the thing - you basically have your team either trying to attack to get their main guy into the yellow jersey or trying to hold off other teams getting their main rider away from the pack to allow them to either make time up on the leader or try and make enough of a gap to take the yellow for him.

Seriously its bloody good to watch mate, all the tactical stuff that goes with it and tbf the scenery you see as there flying along is quite relaxing.

Next year settle down with either a spliff or a beer or two and give it a watch

I'll be honest - and I'm genuinely not trolling - I watched a bit of it earlier and it was just a mass of cycles and nothing happened. I admire how insanely fit they must be, but I couldn't imagine watching it.

                  And a beer.

I might give it a whirl.

I assume you get exciting sprint finishes and stuff.

yeah, the sprints are insane and very often some serious crashes.

Cavendish is a sprinter so he has big leg muscles (I'm simplifying but you get the idea). That means he's not so good at getting over the mountains and loses maybe 30 minutes in a big mountain stage.
                          .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I haven't ridden a bike since my Dawes handmade mountain bike went all rusty in the shed

Any idea about the Cavendish riddle?

Where was Chris Hoy? I thought he was meant to be **** hot
Chris Hoy rides fast for about a kilometre.

And 'fast' means he regularly reaches over 75 km/h. On the flat. From a standing start.
                                .
