    Good point.

Now that I am not duty bound to hate him I c an see the true power of the clear thinking Gatland brings as a coach. Whereas pundits pick predicted teams awash with favouritism and prior form, as you say, Garland picks the team he wants and bases nothing on reputation. Not pundit pressure. His record as a Lions coach is ridiculous.

I personally think Farrell has not done enough, nor does he bring enough currently to get in the starting XV. I’m not even convinced he should be on the bench. Loads of pundits are saying how Murray and Farrell calmed everything down. That’s not what I saw. Not that they were poor but that they arrived in a highly pressurised part of the game. Farrell gave the ball away at least once. The best part of closing out the game was the defensive set in the last 5 mins. The previous 10 had some pretty erratic play which all of the backs were responsible for and they must have breathed a collective sigh of relief when the TMO showed the forward pass from Kolbe.

The temptation to put Russell or Smith on the bench is going to be massive in case the Lions are chasing the scoreboard.

On another note I am intrigued to see how Smith goes for England. He is the least English 10 ever. Will he go the way of Cipriani or will he get a game. He could be an absolute superstar, but it will mean England fundamentally changing the way they play.

It depends on the coach though - Smith would fly in NZ, Wales or Aus as they play that type of game. Once Jones goes let’s see who is next - Cipriani has been the only other player of his ilk in the last number of years and to be honest he was flaky. You can’t be only a maverick - you need the balance. Carlos Spencer and Quade Cooper were amazing but not rounded enough to be elite

I think he (Smith) has the potential to be an absolute Worldie. But not if EJ stays as coach, it’s just not EJ’s way. It will also be interesting to se how he goes at Wuins under a new coach as the Quinn’s rise last season was remarkable without a head coach. He most reminds me of Russell. He doesn’t quite chance it with ball in hand as much as Finn, but they are very similar operators. Both take it to the line and aren’t afraid to get hit, with an offloading game that opens doors.

As mentioned would be very strange to see an England team built around him.

            Classy response from Rassie.

I think it’s pretty easy for any supporter in any sport to crawl through a game and chose the moments that suit the argument. The Lions definitely got the big decisions, though mainly I agreed with them. The first try, if not offside had a forwards pass. Watson was very lucky not to get a yellow, I’d agree with that but it wasn’t a horror tackle.

I think the Boks have more than enough to level the series and it won’t be the ref that an able sit.

Gatland seems an absolute master at all of the mind games anyway.

Good article on the ref team.

I didn’t realise it was the same group for all the tests…!

Will they be announcing the teams in the post match press conferences next week?

What changes do you think we will see Nev? A lot depends on Biggar passing his HIA protocols.

If Wyn Jones is fit he is in - Sutherland wasn’t great and Mako hasn’t a full game in him
Biggar will be picked pending HIA and I don’t think Gats risks Russell so I think Farrell starts if Biggar fails it
I think Daly is under pressure so either Aki or Harris

I still think Williams should play as he is the best under the high ball and I thought Curry wasn’t that good but Watson was too pumped and lucky not to get a card. Most of the team will be the same

Yeah I think I’d agree with most of that.

I don’t think Sutherland did much wrong but Mako was great and Jones was initially chosen ahead of him. So agree there. I also wasn’t convinced by LCD at hooker and wonder if Owens or George might get a game. I think George is a great hooker.

Farrell at 10 is not the most enticing prospect. I think he looks very rusty, but he may thrive in this environment. I’d LOVE to see Russell on the bench.

I wonder about that one? Was Mako so good because he came off the bench?

Some really tricky decisions await. Looks like Wyn Jones isn’t going to make it.
