I know what you mean but I doubt it to be honest. Sky's method is to do things by the numbers and I'm sure his stats in training would have been some way behind what is expected. Perhaps if they had no alternative they'd have selected him but as it is that's obviously not an issue.

Of course that assumes the injury is genuine. But I'm 99.999% sure it is.

But all this stuff about his career being in the balance, I don't see it, unless the injury is worse than we're led to believe.

The thing about Wiggins is that when he loses focus, he really does. After his 2004 gold he went on a bender for nine months. And after his fourth (now third) in the 2009 Tour, he didn't work hard enough and finished 25th (or thereabouts) in 2010. 2011 he was in good shape but had a crash, coming back for the Vuelta and then hungry for success. And lo, 2012.

But he has admitted recently he was struggling in the autumn to balance training with the demands (and delights) of being TdF winner and a national and global sporting icon. The crash towards the end of the year didn't help.

I think this might do him good. A rest and then come back hungry again with a mission to show he's not a one-season wonder.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Oh his career is nowhere near being in the balance, he's 32/33 and has a few years at or near the top still IMO anyway.

I agree with you about the enforced break doing him some good, take him out of the limelight and get him back to being focused on winning races again.

      Looking forward to The Tour

Yes, me too. I wonder if the Spanish will get conspire again like they did at last year's Vuelta.

I still can't get my head round Evans leading BMC.

        Dauphiné tomorrow.

Evans leading BMC is mental, TJ will not be a happy camper. I imagine they'll be hedging their bets heavily though and the first week will probably govern who they really end up backing for the GC.

          Yup should be good

I think he's got a decent chance for this tour although if I'm honest I think Contador might be the man again and maybe just maybe Rodriguez stands a chance.

That's exactly how I see it too.

I've read some saying the course suits Evans.

I just think the effort Evans made in the Giro will have left him with not enough in the tank for the Tour, could be wrong obviously (you know more than me * hates admitting that! )

I hope Geraint Thomas has a good tour

I'd be as surprised as you if Evans competes for all three weeks. But obviously BMC have faith in him, quite why I don't know. Perhaps there's an issue for Van Garderen.

Then again Porte is supposed to be doing the Tour and leading Sky at the Vuelta. But then he's mid-20s while Evans is ten years older.

I agree about Thomas. He could do with a decent performance after Sky's very poor Classics campaign. The same applies to Boasson Hagen and some others.

It does seem that way, I guess you could be right about TJ as it does seem quite strange.

Didn't realise Porte was doing that, I can't imagine he'll be a realistic top 3 contender though for the GC.

Indeed, he most certainly could, I guess you ask the question though how much stock Sky put in them (classics).

They wanted to challenge at least and they didn't do that in any of them. Clearly Sky were designed to win stage races but they were also #1 in the world and a poor Classics campaign doesn't look good. And if they're going to be in it, they compete to win.

I think they expected better of Eisel and especially Boasson Hagen. Thomas was a bit unlucky, puncturing in two races at critical times. Hayman was the only who got any kind of result, third, in one of the semi-Classics. I think that was as good it got. Poor.

They had a training camp in Tenerife instead of racing a lot in the early season and the consensus is it didn't work and they need to try something else next year.

I guess it just proves that actually competing goes a long way rather than just training.

Sky have certainly underachieved this season something you'd think that Brailsford will be desperate to change.

I hadn't realised how good a season Froome has had so far.

                              Thanks for the spoiler.

This should be a good race. It's going to be interesting to see how the leading riders attack each other, what their tactics are. Particularly, how Froome's rivals try to isolate him and whether anyone attacks on descents, especially if there's bad weather.

I was guessing you hadn't seen the results hence the spoiler!

You do get the feeling that it will be team Sky vs the other teams and probably the same sort of format for the Tour. Might be dangerous though and allow someone slightly under the radar to sneak away.
