I know what you mean but I doubt it to be honest. Sky's method is to do things by the numbers and I'm sure his stats in training would have been some way behind what is expected. Perhaps if they had no alternative they'd have selected him but as it is that's obviously not an issue.
Of course that assumes the injury is genuine.
But I'm 99.999% sure it is.
But all this stuff about his career being in the balance, I don't see it, unless the injury is worse than we're led to believe.
The thing about Wiggins is that when he loses focus, he really does. After his 2004 gold he went on a bender for nine months. And after his fourth (now third) in the 2009 Tour, he didn't work hard enough and finished 25th (or thereabouts) in 2010. 2011 he was in good shape but had a crash, coming back for the Vuelta and then hungry for success. And lo, 2012.
But he has admitted recently he was struggling in the autumn to balance training with the demands (and delights) of being TdF winner and a national and global sporting icon. The crash towards the end of the year didn't help.
I think this might do him good. A rest and then come back hungry again with a mission to show he's not a one-season wonder.
