Whatever meathead . I think you'd make it about 400m before pulling a hamstring and collapsing breathless on a sand dune and breaking into tears

Haha. No. For some reason my phone auto corrects run to rub and I always miss it. The number of times I've told the girl I'm knocking about with that I'll pick her up after I've been for a quick rub is embarrassing! It changed blustery run to busty rub to the other day which was a bit awkward!

Just smash a carb gel down at about 8 miles and you'll be tickity boo
A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

Nice one, I'm going to follow this to the letter

I might even treat myself to a busty rub too!

I ask mainly as there's a couple of lads in my office who I wouldn't assume are very fit (one is pretty overweight) who've just completed a 100 mile bike ride. I'm very impressed by that. It's definitely got me tempted to get into cycling as I would have loved to have done that ride. I was wondering roughly how far you think that'd be the equivalent of in terms of running? There's probably no easy answer to that is there?
To answer my own question, it seems as an EXTREMELY rough guide (obviously dependent on many factors), you can roughly multiply/divide by 10 (thats seems a touch high to me). So that 100 mile cycle was effectively a 10 mile run in terms of effort. However in terms of calories burned you'd burn substantially more doing the 100 mile cycle. Or so I understand it. Interesting.

            Assassassassassassin

You did it son, you drove me to smash 27 mins. Just ran 5.094km in 26:48s or 26:30 for 5k! That's a jaw dropping 1min 15secs quicker than my PB

I wanted to beat it, did 8mins 11secs for the 1st half mile and just managed to keep the pace going. Fastest mile was the last one in 7mins 48secs

Well done mate , although I'd have thought my excellent advice was more of a pep talk that Ass Man's abuse

I can answer that Pabs. It's much harder to run a distance than cycle it. 110%

And your advice was great, I just didn't sync my cruise control correctly today. I've entered the Kingston 8 - 16 mile in October. I'm doing the 8 mile, **** running 16

PS, when I say PB I mean previous best not personal best which would sound a bit wanky when you consider how slow I am

                    Probably not.

I don't have any personal experience as I haven't done any running since I was a kid (I'm excluding running while playing football etc. which is different obviously).

I was told you need three times as long in the saddle to burn as many calories as you do when running. But 'in the saddle' is operative too - you're sitting down and can freewheel or pedal slowly and get a rest whereas running is all go all the time and harder on your joints too.

How flat or hilly makes a massive difference on a bike, and it's not just total climbing either - how steep the hills are is yet another factor.

But... It also depends how fast you ride. I read somewhere (i.e. bear with me but I must admit I do find all this hard to believe) that wind resistance is a major issue on a bike and it has a direct squared relationship with speed, i.e. double the speed involves four times the resistance. And the relationship to effort is cubed: it takes eight times more power to go at twice the speed. That means pro riders cruising at 50kph on the flat are eight times more powerful than little old me. I suppose it's possible - maybe I just don't want to believe it.

And then there's also all the variations dependent on how good your bike and riding is - your power/weight ratio, the bike's weight and rotational weight, aerodynamics, etc.

So I dunno: 2 hours running < 6 hours riding.

And 6 hours riding should get you in or around the 100 mile mark. Or much further if it's all downhill and you have a massive tailwind the whole way.
                    .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

5K is about my limit & aye that's not fun at all. Never liked running even when I was big into martial arts fitness. I am quite a good sprinter though.
