When I started doing 5k+ my Achilles started to really hurt. Self-diagnosed Achilles tendonitis from a running forum (very sore on both sides and a spherical swelling in the middle of each tendon). Sorted it by total rest until all soreness was gone and doing Achilles stretching exercises before each run. Never got the problem again.

The pain is receding a bit now, up until yesterday I could hardly stand on my foot when getting out of bed.

It's like it's seized up and is waiting to loosen out of the stiffness but it's yet to happen. For the time being I'm just resting and doing gentle exercises to try and loosen it up.

It's not snapped thank **** but it's not ideal. I want to get into the 6-7 mile distance this coming month as I'm hoping to do a half marathon in November and I'm running out of time. If this doesn't heal in the next week or two it's going to set me back massively.

I was so annoyed because I felt really good on the run too.

Still a long way to go to get to half marathon distance though. And my achilles now ache.

This is either the effects of running on consecutive days, the fact that I've been sat out in the garden trying to write a report for work and my legs are now cold to the bone, or more likely the powers of suggestion having read your earlier post.

Anyone got any tips on how you should increase distance before a half marathon? I've never even done a 10k race before so any advice welcome. Should I aim to have run the full distance beforehand?

Good work, Saveloy. I always stress that this is just me and everyone is different but... I don't think you need to up your long runs that much more. Rule of thumb for 13 is to be in a position where you can run 9 miles comfortably. Not smashed, not hanging on but comfortably. If you can do that then you'll be great. And 10ks are a different beast in my eyes. It's not about endurance or just getting finished. They should be raced and balls out hard at that.

So 13k. That for a couple more weeks. Maybe add a little but not much then jump to 15 and do that till it's a consistent speed. Easy peasy
A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

Have or had you got the swelling in each tendon? Run your thumb and forefinger along either side of the tendon and you should feel a ball-like swelling. I'll leave it to your good self to let this process descend into self-seduction and flamboyant wanking.

Cheers Rowan. That makes it sounds much more manageable.

10km. Was in a right piss after work but that's sorted me out.

Got to go and log in from home now though

11.4k this evening. Suffering on the last 2 runs. Think I'm barely hanging in at the 10k level. Doing 60-70k a month isn't enough.
