Peter Moores to lose England job once Andrew Strauss takes charge at ECB
• Strauss’s appointment as director of cricket will spell end for head coach
• Alastair Cook’s position as captain also threatened by ECB shake-up
• Andy Bull: Peter Moores inspires cynicism rather than hope
Peter Moores is set to be removed as England head coach after Andrew Strauss takes over as the new director of cricket.
The Guardian has learned that Moores’ second spell in charge of the national team will be ended with the arrival of Strauss, whose appointment will be confirmed early next week by the England and Wales Cricket Board.
The news comes with Moores currently overseeing the one-day international against Ireland in Malahide, a fixture which Strauss was due to commentate on for Sky Sports before deciding to stay away so as to avoid questions on the subject.
The broadcaster confirmed the open secret about Strauss at the start of their programme, with presenter Ian Ward explaining: “It is highly likely that he will be the new cricket director, and if that appointment does go ahead it will be announced next week.”
Alastair Cook’s continuation as Test captain similarly remains up in the air and this initial decisive move will demonstrate that Strauss’ tenure will not be one to take the cautious route that many have tipped.
It is understood Strauss’ former Middlesex team-mate and Australia opener Justin Langer could be sounded out about replacing Moores but his family situation may see him remain in charge of Western Australia.
The speculation surrounding Moores’ future has swirled since Colin Graves was elected to take over as the ECB chairman. His five-year term starts next week and Jason Gillespie, Graves’ head coach at Yorkshire, has been continually linked with the England despite distancing himself publicly.
Strauss’ fellow Sky commentator Nick Knight, the former England one-day opener, insists Strauss will not bring the conservative approach many fear and admits he has sympathy for Moores’ expected departure. “I think there’s a view that it’ll be a cautious appointment, but I don’t see that at all,” Knight told Sky. “He’s not just going to sit back and let the course unfold with the same captain and the same coach, I think he’ll look at the changes he can make. When this unfolds, I think we’ll see a new Andrew Strauss.”
Asked if he believed there will be a new coach, Knight added: “Yes I do. I think Peter will move aside. I feel desperately sorry for Peter. The fact he’s here today says a lot about him. He could have stayed at home, but he wants to be out there.
“He’s desperately keen to be involved in this set-up. He genuinely feels that he is taking this team forward. I would have to disagree. With the results we’ve had, particularly with the World Cup and the series in West Indies, I feel there’s some international pedigree missing from this England set-up, and I think Peter Moores should be moved aside.”

Sounds like Graves is going to pull the trigger and Strauss fire some bullets.
Starting by sacking someone is a great way to make everyone know not to **** about with you. I reckon Cook will no doubt live to regret his comments at the end of the last test match. Crazy. His captaincy is wank anyway, so it is a decision worth making.
It also seemed a bit odd that he referred to Peter Moores as 'Moorsey'. Far to comfortable.Modifying post.

Was chatting about that with a mate at work the other day. I loved it in a way, he finally showed some balls. But I'd love to see him gone so loved it for that tooOriginally posted by Buzzo View PostI reckon Cook will no doubt live to regret his comments at the end of the last test match. Crazy.
What an idiot. Of all the times to be his own man.

There is a beautiful irony in it, isn't there? What a fool. Its schoolboy stuff. You don't slag off the new boss. And you certainly don't do it on TV.Modifying post.
