I don't think equating Italy and England is reasonable. Maybe Italy's squad isn't that much better overall but...

Buffon - best goalkeeper in the world over the last 15 years. England have er, um...

Cannavaro (and Nesta except he wasn't playing) - both outstanding central defenders. Ferdinand is hardly the same class.

Pirlo - a great passer, controls midfield from deep, great on dead balls. Hargreaves? Carrick? Nope.

Totti - finally got somewhere near his best on a big stage. OK, Gerrard is even better at club level but for he underperforms for England more than Totti has for Italy. Rooney is pretty good though.

Add to that good players like Gattuso, Grosso, Materazzi, Toni and the odd excellent one like Zambrotta.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

i don't really think that that italian side had much much better players than England. terry and ferdinand are both world class defenders. in midfield you have lampard and gerrard witch can be as effective as totti if played right. up front is really only rooney thats of the required standard since owen has lost his way. italy have **** wingers so they didn't play with proper wingers, but england always have to play the classic 442 even though they don't have enough quality to play like that. i think a new system has to be adopted for england that fits the squad better. and if he can get england to play as disciplined as italy did they might stand a chance.

          And Buffon?

I do agree that Capello can make a vast improvement.

buffon is and was very important, and i'll grant you that england have ****e keepers and fullbacks, in those aerias italians are far far ahead of them. but what i was mearly saying is that i wasn't all to impressed with the italian squad that won the title and given that, and add on a good performance from key players i think england have a shot...

I'm sorry mate, but **** that he's the most overrated player of this generation. Yes he was a 'good' player but the British press even ranked him ahead of players like Figo.
Overmars, Pires, Giggs were/are better players than him.

Why does he deserve his 100th cap when he's playing in a crap league and is definately short of match fitness? How was he a good England captain?

                  You're overrating English players.
