I recall a client we had, once, a young lad. About 19. He was up for his third assault charge. The previous two had been small time, common assault, bit of pushing. This one was slightly more serious and involved a weapon.

I said to him “This is your third offence. Do you WANT to go to prison?” and he said “I don't care. If someone looks at me funny I’ll give him a smack. If someone has a go at me I’ll make sure they can’t walk home.” I broke the cardinal rule of law by curiously asking him “…why?”

He could not answer me except to tell me he’d do it again. And again. That was his belief. This kid had a 2 year old son. He proudly told me that his first word was “Bang!”

Pretty much sounds like Pippo’s attitude towards things. Someone has a go, you give them a smack. Is this what we are teaching kids these days?

i know it's unworkable and fascist and an affront to human dignity and all that but part of me instinctively responds to the idea of neutering these ****s - let them run themselves into an early grave but the fact that they get the opportunity to **** up someone innocent...

i had talk****e on yesterday and they were saying he has a screw loose and how they fel soRry for him and that he needs help not jail. wtf the guy is a thug and his family has a rep in huyton. Just look at his brother ffs. If barton had not been a footballer he would have been in prison a long time ago. Should of got another 12 months yesterday as well.

Admittedly my first post on the thread was sensationalist, but I really dislike the witch hunt mentality - everyone deserves a defence.

We are demanding levels of decency and restraint from a footballer that we can't even expect from our leaders that govern over us. The problem is with society at large, Barton is no different than any other kid who goes out at the weekend, gets pissed and has a fight. You see this behaviour in every town in the country.

Money is no Moral subjucator, just because he earns 50,000 a week doesn't change his mentality or his upbringing.

We live in a society that either accepts or is ignorant to the attrocities its government commits in the name of Sovereignty, yet we scream murder when a footballer gives a little scally a kicking.

If the authorities can invade, plunder and dismantle foreign states to protect our identity and status as a power, then who can tell the kid on the street that he can't protect his status or pride if someone threatens it, no matter how warped his sense of status is?

I think he needs help, with counselling rather than imprisonment. More prison time won't change him.
