Criticising a keeper for not saving penalties

He needs to start saving penalties and more shots in general if we're going to stop turning wins into draws. If I was a forward faced with a one on one with him, I'd fancy my chances compaired to likes of Hart and even Friedel. I don't rate them as better keepers overall before you jump in. It's just they have more of those games where its seems its impossible to beat them whereas I can remember only a few for Reina.

I still think he's been our best keeper since old Brucie though.

How about players stop giving them away instead? Its ridiculous to expect a keeper to save penalties, its just a bonus if it happens.

I never thought we'd ever come up with a solution to this mystical problem, but it seems Chris has had his eureka moment.

                    Another extract from Pepe's book:

Ever since we moved to Liverpool we have loved the city and the people. They have made us feel so comfortable, it is as if we were born there. It has been especially helpful to our children. However, i do get harassed when i pick them up from school, and from one man in particular. He is constantly bothering me and going on about two so-called traitors in the dressing room, local lads apparently, who are only interested in themselves and not the club. He keeps telling me not to trust them and how they will stab me in the back just like they did to Rafael. I do not know his name but he speaks with a Scandanavian accent and carries around a framed picture of Rafa Benitez, which he strokes and kisses from time to time. It is a little disturbing.

Can footballers have sex the night before a match?

                        Pepe Reina:
Erm... why not?! Not in the training camp, when partners are not allowed in. But if you are at home or your partner is staying with you have a routine, habits. If you are staying with your partner a couple should do what they normally do, routines shouldn’t be broken. I don’t really know though...!

Who is the sexiest lad you've ever come across in the dressing room?

                        Pepe Reina:
I appear to have been joined by some naughty people. Joaquin from Malaga is a bit special... just kidding!

I see one or two from here have already posted questions for him
Hmm, not happy about that, plenty of research to suggest otherwise. This particularly is a stand out. Although there is some truth to it.

The #1 function of any living organism is to reproduce!

It may seem crass but that’s really our number one responsibility in life, to have sex. Without the need for sex, and without having sex, our species will fail to exist. That’s probably why our bodies are hardwired to enjoy sex more than anything else.

There are theories of success, that believe having too much sex makes it hard for any guy to be successful at anything (let alone boxing). Males are driven to have sex; that is their #1 motivation to succeed at anything. The theories further explain that that if males had no desire to have sex (attract females), males would not have become amazing musicians, artists, businessman, athletes, etc, etc. Therefore, by having sex, you lose the desire to have sex, and therefore lose your inner desire succeed…because you already “succeeded” (and achieved the male’s #1 goal).

Scientifically and physiologically, the effect of having sex doesn’t matter. Boxing trainers will say it makes you weak or less aggressive. Researchers might say it helps you. Experts on kung-fu or spiritualism, might say that having sex drains your inner energy. The inner chi, spiritual energy, it’s called different things in different arts and different cultures. Again, the arguments go back and forth. Whether sex helps you physically is not the point. The point is: having sex takes away your motivation to succeed, it weakens your competitive spirit. By already having the REAL reward of success, you lose the desire to fight for it.

Pepe Reina: Hi, I'm Pepe Reina. It's good to be here to answer your questions - let's get started!

Hello Pepe, it’s a pleasure to be able to speak to you. All the teams that have won the World Cup or European Championships have failed in the next tournament. Are you as a group conscious of this problem?
                              1:59

Pepe Reina: We are conscious of it, that no-one has managed to retain such a title. It is very difficult and we are going to try to break the spell.

Pepe, you star. How do you see Liverpool this season? Is your main objective to win a cup (Europa League, FA Cup, Carling Cup), more so than the Premier League?

                              2:00

Pepe Reina: The objective is to continue improving, and if we peak well we can claim a major title. The main objective though is to return to the Champions League - so the Premier League is the priority.

Pepe, they say that you are the soul of the group in the Spain team. Have you had to mediate among your team-mates because of Clasico infighting between Barcelona and Real Madrid players? Gerard Pique said Jose Mourinho is the culprit of the madness. Do you agree?

                              2:03

Pepe Reina: Actually I’ve not had to mediate anything! What happens on the pitch for the clubs should not turn up at the national team. And the first people to say this are the Real and Barca players...

I think you are the best of the three Spain goalkeepers. Has the high level of keepers in Spain harmed you? In any other country both you and Victor Valdes would be the number one keeper - just look at the level in England or Germany. And behind you there are David De Gea and Diego Lopez...

                              2:04

Pepe Reina: I wouldn’t say the level has harmed me because I have become a European and World champion as a result! I am proud to be Spanish, and it’s possible that you have a point as our level is high. The youngsters also talk about the youth-team set ups and the high level there.

What do you think about the support for Liverpool? And do you not think that Jose Enrique deserves a call-up for Spain?

                              2:06

Pepe Reina: The supporters are dreaming of success, but it is a new project with renewed ambition. We have the best support in the world, they are always with us. Regarding Jose Enrique, he knows that he is in a position where he will probably get the call and, if it does come, he wants to take it well.

When are you coming home? It has been rumoured that Malaga would sign you, that Manuel Pellegrini likes you. That’s the main thing that we need, a top class keeper...

                              2:07

Pepe Reina: I have said it many times, but I am happy at Liverpool. I cannot yet see a time when I would return to Spain. I have worked with Pellegrini before and he is a wonderful coach. Thanks for the support from Malaga!

                              2:11

Pepe Reina: They misunderstood the joke and that was what I remember! It was a joke and we didn’t give it any real importance.

What are the main differences between Rafael Benitez, Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish?

                              2:14

Pepe Reina: The three of them have had successful careers, but with differences. Rafa likes to work on organisation and squeezing the maximum out of everything; Roy prefers to coach defensive order; Kenny likes to give players freedom and magic. Each one has good things that we learn from.

Pepe Reina: In my head I always wanted to stay at Liverpool. I was flattered by the interest of a big team. The club decided not to send me and that was the end of the discussion.

Pepe Reina: There is no frustration. I am lucky to have him as a friend and a colleague. We spend a lot of time together and we have much in common.

A couple more details from Pepe's book

Pepe:"My physical attributes mean that this is the best style for me because I am quick enough to sweep up any ball that is played in behind the defensive line. I definitely prefer this way of playing and it was actually one of the key factors in my transfer to Liverpool because Rafa had seen me play for Villarreal and he wanted his team to play in a similar style.
... if a keeper is confident enough in his own ability to deal with a loose ball, then it allows his teammates to push higher up the pitch and play with a higher intensity. This is what I prefer and during Roy Hodgson's time at Liverpool you could see that we were playing deeper and my performance levels were not the best.
...If you look at the most successful teams, the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United, they ask their keepers to act as sweepers and this approach hasn't done them too much harm."
Pepe:"Now, when I speak with English people when I am abroad, they ask me if I am a Scouser. It is one of the best compliments I can have because it means I am a part of Liverpool and one of the people. I wouldn't have it any other way. "
