Smeltz on brink of Turkey move

Gold Coast United star Shane Smeltz is set to quit the A-League side to join a club side in Turkey.

Last season's Golden Boot winner is flying to Turkey today to undergo a medical, and continue negotiations with Genclerbirligi.

The New Zealand All Whites representative will join Socceroos Mile Jedinak and Bruce Djite at the club.

United boss Clive Mensink said in a club statement that the transfer process was still not complete, but wished Smeltz all the best should the deal proceed as expected over the next 72 hours.

"Naturally, we will be sorry to see Shane go, but we are pleased that he may now be able to pursue his dream of playing with a major overseas club," he said.

"He has been the subject of constant transfer speculation since he returned from China, but to his credit has remained focused on his job at Gold Coast United, which was illustrated by his tremendous performance in Wellington recently.

"If this transfer is completed we wish him all the very best for the future."

Before departing for Turkey, Smeltz thanked his Gold Coast bosses for accommodating the transfer request.

"Gold Coast United's owner, Clive Palmer, CEO Clive Mensink and Miron Bleiberg have all been fantastic with me since I returned from China and I would like to place on record my sincere thanks for everything they have done and all their support," he said.

"Genclerbirligi are a stable club who play in a strong competition and I'm looking forward to holding discussions with them over the next couple of days."

Victory are without their main goal scorer Archie Thompson who saves their backsides over and over again. Hopefully my team, Gold Coast United will continue their misery tomorrow at Skilled Park.

We haven't had an opportunity to have a laugh at his expense yet. last yr they got a dodgy peno, he blasted it over the top and the Ref let him retake it cause someone had a toe on the line or whatever and he scored and carried on big time.
