Not his best performance for us last night. He's been done in a few games now with players going past him to the the byline in the way Andy Johnson did. GJ would have been hammered for those mistakes. Think his future's definitely more at centre back when he bulks up a bit more.

I just hope he doesnt end up over-exposed like Insua did last year. If I remember, we were all raving about him after his first few games too.

Just out of interest, how much do you think Kelly is worth on current form?

Not much - £1-2m. That big eared guy we got rid of Stephen Wright, showed IMO as much promise than Kelly and he went for £1.5m I think

Not a chance - Kelly has had a few man of the match performances and has really caught the eye - Wright was never that good.

Saying Kelly could be worth as little as £1m when we sold Wright amost 10 years ago for £1.5m is crazy talk! (I think we actually ended up getting £3m for Wright anyway).

At the very least £5-6m but it would be crazy to sell cause his potential is endless.

Is it though? We signed Heskey for £11m back then. The equivalent player of Heskey in this day and age would not cost £22m now. It would probably be the same price. The football market was at it's peak around the year 2000/01/02 onwards. Take teams such as Chelsea, Man City and Real Madrid out of the equation and I can guarentee teams were spending more money back then than they are now, in particular the Italian teams. A lot of the Italian teams are skint now as a result of the stupid money they spent at the start of Millenium

He's played 22 games for us and all of a sudden he's worth £6m?

If he was young striker and had played 20 games and scored 10 goals or something, then yes you could say he's worth that. But he's a defender who's put in a couple of good performances.

I think it depends what you mean. It would be madness for us to sell a young, versatile player for any less than that (~£6m). Would anyone pay that, well that is a different issue. Certainly in order to get a replacement of better quality we would have to pay that sort of money (and probably pay them much higher wages into the bargain).

I only ask because we were talking about it last night in the pub. Someone was saying Kelly is worth nothing much (£1-2mil) becuase he is young and has only really been doing well for 6 months. But others were saying 6-7mil. Based on the fact that players of a similar age are going for more money. I think if he does it again for another season he will be worth that. But time will tell

Spot on. His current value is hardly anything. His potential value is higher but potential is meaningless unless it's backed up with 1-2 seasons as a regular first team player.

Exactly which is why it was madness why to got rid of Insua. A lot of people on this forum in particular were happy to see the back of him. You had people saying how ****ing Konchesky was a better player than Insua when we first signed him - that theory got refuted

I'd put a 10m tag on Kelly already. The potential is there for all to see. Not many FB's have this kind of composure at such a young age. He's not all about physicality. He can use his brains too when he has the ball at his feet.

Its very difficult to say what the 2000 version of Heskey would be worth in todays market as our perceptions of him now are clouded by how he's turned out.

Would a player of Darren Bents level have been sold for £24m 10 years ago? I very much doubt it.

Regardless of the above, my main issue was with the comparison between Kelly and Wright - I think Kelly has been much better than Wright ever was.
