Andy Carroll is expected to have a medical tonight as West Ham prepare to tie up his move in a deal which could cost them £46million.
Amid late interest from Newcastle, the striker flew back from a holiday in the United States last night to agree a contract with West Ham reported to be £100,000 a week for six years.
The Hammers had already agreed a club record £15m fee with Liverpool, who have taken a big loss on the deal after paying Newcastle a British record £35m for the striker just two and a half years ago.
In view of his previous injury problems, Carroll was due to undergo an extensive medical and the deal could be finalised as early as tomorrow.
Should the 24-year-old see out his contract then he will cost the club £31m in wages but West Ham have decided to make that commitment after his impressive season on loan, scoring seven goals in 25 Premier League appearances.
Manager Sam Allardyce made signing Carroll permanently his priority during the close season and will be delighted the deal is close to being finalised after extensive talks. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
