Parisian French accent is like that. It does its best in exhibiting that feeling you talked about. I prefer the lovelier southern French accent, it's got more warmth in it.
    Are we winning?

I think it's partly because they generally have a got a mouthful of bread and coffee.

I remember an exam I took way back - we had to listen to a French radio discussion and write a summary in English - the 3 men involved all sounded like they were talking thorugh the usual mouthful of breakfast, there appeared to be cars/trains/planes going past in the background and as it was a real French broadcast, they were talking over each other, speaking really quickly, missing out words etc. People left the room in tears, it was carnage.

Has shaggy apologised to the scottish nation yet?

Suppose deep down he wanted to apologise; do you think the attitude of people on here would encourage him to do so? The tone of most of this car crash of a thread has more to do with point scoring than détente.

I appreciate that I'm coming to this debate late on, Polo. But I'd say no.
A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

Patriotism is a mugs game. I haven't "supported" England for a year or so now after coming to the conclusion that being patriotic is absurd. It breeds hatred, it breeds ignorance, and its a form of blind faith based on what? The fact that you happen to be born within the same national boundaries as the 11 men on the pitch. Big deal. Whats more, you have no respect for half of those 11 men most of the time so why pull on the shirt and cheer aloud to celebrate their success?

Living in Wales for a number of years has shown me the ugly side of patriotism. A hatred for all things English is instilled at a very early age and whilst the majority of the time develops into nothing more than a little banter, there is always a bitter edge. A lot of the Celtic population are some of the most patriotic, and thats not a compliment.

Patriotism. What a load of bollocks.

                          Read this

                          post some parts here :

The English poet, Ben Johnson wrote: “Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.” By this he meant that when leaders no longer command any moral authority, when they can no longer justify their views by rational argument, by moral and ethical criteria, they resort to rousing calls for patriotism. It is sometimes a last desperate attempt to justify immoral and unethical actions by making a crude appeal to the emotions of the public.

Sometimes, the most patriotic thing to do is to tell your leaders that they are wrong. Muhammad Ali, the boxer, did so when he refused to fight in Vietnam. He was called all sorts of nasty names. His patriotism was questioned, but later his stand was vindicated and he became an international hero. Nelson Mandela fought the unjust laws of the Apartheid regime in South Africa. He paid for that by spending 27 years in prison. He was accused him of being a traitor, being un-patriotic and un-South African. But today most South Africans treat him like their saviour, and his struggle inspires people who love justice and fair dealing, all over the world.
