I doubt Helios is really applying it to all Scots but I think perhaps Scots underestimate the causal prejudice English people encounter there.

It's also possible English people overestimate it but that's a natural response to an environment where prejudice against you is more common than it is elsewhere.

I've had similar in England by virtue of my "Scotch" accent but there's certainly more anti Englishness up here than there is anti Scottishness down there - by a long chalk.

That's true, my brother and I moved down to England when he was 3 and I was 6 months. We went up for a wedding a couple of years ago and some of the wedding party were telling us that Irn Bru tastes better in Scotland. Also my auntie was saying to my mum that you would never have a wedding this good in England, my Mum just smiled and thought your a idiot. Anyway there's a minority of idiots in every country that ruin the name of the rest. Except white south africans, there all dickheads

You should see the North East. I suppose because of the small ethnic minority numbers (and the lack of high paid jobs) we've had less integration. Subsequently you've a basket case area where our 'rivalry' extends everywhere but the city you were born in (and the Irish, who are loved by all Northerners ).

I'll hold my hands up to being a supporter of anyone but England football wise. How could anyone really support a bunch of odious, over hyped, sensationalised under achievers like the England team? Terry, Cole, Lampard, Ferdinand - come on...

Its regional rivalry for me, nothing more. I used to take a lot of anti Scottish abuse when I moved to the North East, but felt a lot more at home on Merseyside because of the lack of affinity with England. They seem to like Scotland here, I alluded to that in an earlier post. Its good humoured.

Elsewhere not so much.

Anyway, the English have much the same relationship with France, Germany, Argentina, Australia, Wales, Ireland...

I don't think that's correct at all. The English have a very peculiar and probably unhealthy relationship with Germany (and often the US, while we're about it) and there is a bitchy rivalry with France.

Argentina is only an issue because of the Falklands War but I think very few really have a problem with the country and its people. It's a long way off both geographically, culturally and economically.

As for the others, I think the English feel naturally warm towards them and are surprised and even hurt by the hostility they feel they get back. Of course a little less ignorance of the consequences of English imperialism might help them appreciate why there is general dislike...

Look at the historical power relationships between these countries and a pattern emerges.

True but that's not just fellow Brit's, it's everyone. I always ask them why there here if they don't like it.

There was no racism directed at the English officials, they were booed when they names were called out that was it. I support England when they get to the tournaments I didn't use to but since the South Africans won the world cup in 2007 it pissed me off how many New Zealanders, Aussies, Welsh, Irish and Scottish were supporting them. Every Africkans (is that what the white South Africans call themselves?) I have met is a ****ing arrogant racist dickhead. I'm sure there's a video of splitting image with a song called never met a nice South African. Also speaking of Racism my family mainly grew up in Wolverhampton and when my brother went to secondary school he was bullied by (British) Indians about being Scottish, mainly because one of the main leaders got picked on because he was wearing a turban from some of the white boys, so he picked on someone else that was different.

Strangely, French, when spoken by a woman sounds someone whispering in your ear - you can feel her breath on your neck. When spoken by most French men sounds like someone pompously lecturing somebody, with their mouthful of bread and coffee.
