The Barcelona v Real Madrid thread

Barring major upsets, the final will now pit him against Wayne Rooney, and on current form they have to be the best two players in the world.

Yet Rooney is not quite in Messi's league. Here's how I rate their characteristics:

Ability to go past opponents: Messi 10, Rooney 8

Eye for goal: Messi 10, Rooney 9

Heading: Messi 7, Rooney 8

Work ethic: Messi 10, Rooney 10

Tackling: Messi 7, Rooney 8

Pace: Messi 10, Rooney 9

Total: Messi 54 Rooney 52

It is so close, but the Argentinean shades it. Which makes it all the more sad that his team played the way they did on Wednesday night.

Just showed the sending off on SSN again, never in my life have i seen 7 or 8 players charge at the Ref all together....literally surrounding him. All over a little tackle on the cheating, horrible cunt that is Danny Alves.

They should be punished for that, 7 or 8 grown men running after a Ref...hard men aren't they.

So on that premise I take it the two jumping tackles by Rafael against us this season weren't reds because he didn't make contact! It's about intent, I've seen reds given for less than that although it could have easily just been a yellow.

And you've never seen that kind of thing before with players surrounding the ref ?How about Chelsea under Mourinho the Mancs every game something goes against them! lots of examples if you use google!

Watch the match again there was diving from Barca no doubt but the way Di Maria looks to fall over at every chance as well as fake Ronaldo is awful as well - both sides need to cut that **** out.

The one constant in the issues Mourinho moans about is himself, did at Chelsea, Inter and now Madrid - poor loser and he comes across as someone that suffers from egomania

Because in their semi-final against Real Madrid, Barca were less than a team. They were a disgrace.

We hear a lot about Spanish football and how we must learn from it. We hear a lot about how Barcelona are "more than a club".

But apart from the brilliance of Messi - the one out of 20 outfield players on the pitch who actually tried to do a Ray Wilkins and stay on his feet - there was absolutely nothing to be learned from the Champions League semi-final first leg. Apart from the dark arts of simulation.

Some of you might be giggling at the idea of Robbie Savage having a go at cheats and divers. But if I'd been born with the talent of Sergio Busquets, Dani Alves or David Villa, you wouldn't have seen me pull some of the strokes I did earlier in my career.

And yes, Wednesday did prove what I've said here many times before, that even the best players will seek an advantage if it gives them the best chance to win. But Barcelona took that to a new level.

Real Madrid were almost as bad. Cristiano Ronaldo was at his petulant worst and Jose Mourinho's nonsensical conspiracy theories will have damaged him in the eyes of Sir Alex Ferguson when it comes to choosing the great man's successor.

But Barca's play-acting made for a terrible example and but for Messi, the best player I've ever seen live, the whole match would have been a total farce.

I think the two teams bring out the worst in one another, nothing more. A lot of derbies are like that. get over it.

Barcelona don't have diving, play acting and cheating as a part of their game plan in every game like a team with Mourinho as manager do.

They do in some games but not all the time like Real do. Look at the way Xabi acts now at Real and compare how he acted when he played for us. Now he puts a lot more pressure on the referee. Look at the way Arbeloa acts now. Now he stamps on players, kicks them and makes many dirty tackles behind the back of the referee.

All a part of the Jose Mourinho tactic. Always been that. Usually Barcelona don't need to act in the same way but they decided to do it in this game.
