I think that if we were to sign Mata it would be a huge psychological boost for us. It's one thing being able to spend big on British players and prospects, but if we were able to sign a highly regarded European player who a number of big clubs were after it would be a huge statement of intent.

This could be the pivotal moment for next season, it really could. If we let Mata slip into Arsenals clutches it will be a big boost for them and a blow for us IMO. We need them to carry on imploding as they are because they are going to be the team we will need to displace from the top 4 next season.

They way I see it, he’s not going to play any better than Nasri did last year, so they aren’t exactly strengthening as such. For them it’s a necessity, for us a luxury.

Call me mental but I think for next season only that Downing would have more effect at Liverpool than Mata would have at Arsenal*

Could be proved tragically wrong, but the thought did cross my mind yesterday.

We’ll then be free to poach the star of next year’s full Euro’s, rather than the kiddies one.

If we can land Mata I think it would truly be a signal that LFC is going places and that most talented players in world still see us a viable option and that in itself could really make a difference in terms of what type of players we can attract that are not British based.

Sure we will have to pay the price for not being in CL and cause we don't seem to be the only interested party but I would hope this is one player that we really want to sign and I'm hoping we will.

Mata is one transfer that IMO would be worth pushing the boat and paying a wee bit over the odds to get. Personally it would sit much better with me paying over the odds for Mata, than Stuart Downing.

It would definitely be a statement of intent. But we've missed out of several targets already, wouldn't be a surprise if this one was the same as.
