i missed him out on purpose as to not appear biased....

the point is - whilst nothing against scholes, he was a very good player - i could name with ease, with no real bias and hardly any thought, 10 players better than scholes in his 'era' that i can't see any valid debate in favour of scholes against them.

i could go on, and add the likes of Zola, Shearer, Keane, Bergkamp, Viera, Maldini etc who could be argued we as good/if not better. - and i'm not even mentioning the likes of Gullit, Baresi, Weah, Best, Dalglish, Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Van Basten - the list could go on...

this isn't a bash at scholes - just a bash at the unreal ott reaction for him retiring he was a good pplayer, and admiration is high especially from fellow pros because he was talented, quiet and well liked but in 5 years time....when you draw a list of top 10 players, top 20 players, top 50 players etc - scholes will be long forgoten i reckon
i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

The reaction has been well OTT, I never like the ginger cunt - thought he was well over rated and the whole typical Scholes tackle thing was a ****ing joke.

      **** him.

right....that's no thought put into, just off the top of my head....10 players better than scholes since scholes made his debut
I honestly think that is complete crap. This season was by far his weakest but he has run some games almost single handedly in the last couple of seasons.

I'm not sure that I wouldn't put him above Giggs to be honest.

Truly we will never see his like again.

          Unless Wilshere develops as expected.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

I don't think many will agree with this but Xabi Alonso for me is a much better player than Scholes ever was. Xabi was more the more complete midfielder of the two as he could actually tackle.

I believe I could name at least 50 players better than Scholes since he made his debut:

            Viera
            Keane
            Gerrard
            Lampard (open to debate)
            Ronaldinho
            Ronaldo
            Rivaldo
            Dildo
            Henry
            Hyypia
            Zola
            Bergkamp
            Ruud van Horseface
            Raul
            Zidane
            Nedved
            Riquelme
            Cristiano Ronaldo
            Iniesta
            Xavi
            David Villa
            Messi
            Eto'o
            Totti
            Del Piero
            Roberto Baggio
            Figo

**** me, the list is endless I have to stop!!! What a joke. He's not the player the world is making him out to be - yes he was good. He's done **** all for the last 5 years - bloody ginger nut.

If he was that good, why has he never been in the runnng for European/World player of the year?

Well Jack goes into every challenge he makes with his studs showing (poor technique, malicious, or just a by-product of his bandy legedness......take your pick)
So he's well on the way to emulating Scholes

Because Beckham used to win it every year for marrying Posh Spice. At least that's how I seem to remember events at the time.

In fairness, his delivery on the international stage was mediocre at its best (regardless on any mitigating circumstances around England selection policy).
Good player, very good in fact, but is as far from being considered a world great as a lot of very good players out there.
Never mind the fact that the lad was finished a few seasons back...........still, he kept his mouth shut, rarely ever gave less than his best, and came across as a decent individual. Lot of young players out there would be well advised to follow his example.

I can't believe the people* who are saying Messi can't be considered one of the best ever until he wins the world cup are lauding so much praise on Scholes for being 'one of the best'. Does the same not apply to English players or is it just Man Utd players?

I think people who claim that about Messi are questioning whether he has proved himself to be one of the best players the world has ever seen, i.e. alongside Pele, Maradona, Hunt , etc. I think it's wrong and unnecessarily mean-spirited but at least it's an arguable point of view.

Has anyone sensible (i.e. not someone to do with Manchester United) suggested Scholes is one of the best players of all time? Surely no one is that stupid.

Messi is too young and has done it for too few years to be regarded as on a par with the like of Pele. Yet.

Scholes has been doing it long enough to conclude that he doesn't belong in that bracket.

I saw a Twitter conversation when someone asked if Scholes at his peak would get in the current Barca side.

Nearly everyone who responded said yes ...and that he'd replace INIESTA!

Agree about Scholes. And of course Messi needs to do it over a longer time than he has so far. But if he carries on at the same level for, say, another five or more years, then surely he's there, even if he doesn't win the world cup.

It's so pathetically one-eyed. Even the hagiographers on 5Live yesterday were saying he'd be on the bench given Barca's first choice midfield three.

                                Iniesta completes Barca.

They only comparison you make possibly make with scholes is how pale they are.
