Forlan set for Spurs move on free transfer

Jul 24 2011 by Alan Nixon, The People

    Diego Forlan Diego Forlan

Tottenham are making a new move for Uruguay star Diego Forlan and hope to sign the Atletico Madrid ace on a FREE transfer.

Spurs supremo Daniel Levy is set to offer former Manchester United hitman Forlan, 32, a stunning personal package after hearing he could move from the Spanish side for nothing.

Forlan was the joint top scorer at last summers World Cup finals, as well as winning the Golden Ball award as the tournaments best player.

However, his transfer value has fallen after a disappointing season and now People Sport can reveal Atletico will let him go without a fee.

The big snag is Forlans wages. He is on a staggering £160,000-a-week, which Spurs could not match but they are trying to get near.

Forlan has been wanted by boss Harry Redknapp for some time but the cost of the package was too much.

It will still be costly for Spurs to offer him a two or three-year deal, with the club hoping he will accept a pay cut to £90,000-a-week in order to play. Forlan is unlikely to figure much at Atletico after fall-outs with the club hierarchy.

His availability has been flashed to several Premier League clubs but Tottenham have taken the biggest {interest and are a project the Uruguayan fancies.

    Chasing

Redknapps striking options are few and he would love to land Forlan, who has enjoyed plenty of success in Spain since leaving Old Trafford in 2004, including scoring both of Atleticos goals in their UEFA Cup Final win over Fulham in May 2010.

Spurs were keen on another former United striker in Giuseppe Rossi, 23, but he looks set to join Juventus for around £25million from Villarreal

after missing out on a switch to Barcelona.

Redknapp and Levy badly need to get their transfer act together after a frustrating summer.

The chairman has been chasing targets without success and the pair even clashed over the failed signing of Mexican Antonio Pedroza Whitham, with Levy setting up the move only for Redknapp to insist the youngster wasnt ready for his squad.

Spurs are still keen on Roma forward Mirko Vucinic. The Italian club are willing sell him for around £17m, but Spurs have valued the Montenegro international, 27 at only £14m.

The only striker Spurs have landed so far is 16-year-old Ivory Coast starSouleymane Coulibaly.

Levy masterminded that move too, with the players camp receiving more than £1m to join while his club Siena only picked up about £300,000.

BRISTOL CITY boss Keith Millen wants South Africa World Cup star Bongani Khumalo to make it a Tottenham double in his defence.

Millen hope s to sign Khumalo, 24, on a long-term loan deal and has opened talks with Redknapp. The Robins already have teenager Steven Caulker on loan from White Hart Lane to build up his experience.

Reading are also keen on powerful Khumalo, who was born in Swaziland but grew up in Pretoria, and was on loan at Preston last season before the spell was cut short by injury.

            Yes, I know.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

That's why commentators refer to the player during a game as 'Charl' because there's only one on the pitch at a time. The written 'Charles' is the plural and refers to all four in the squad.

Whilst perhaps not the correct forum to discuss it, I've always wondered what will happen to sport when/if we ever develop human cloning. Will teams be allowed to field more than one of the same player? Will all the best teams be able to have a Messi like they do on FIFA Ultimate Team?

To be fair to Warnock it appears Briatore et al. have not given him any money and even suggested he won't get money from potential sales.

Personally I think Warnock could get something out of Gabbidon and Dyer will remain a crock.
