I am sure that someone on here once said that a right footed Downing would be a Championship player. Well, whatever I thought of him he is here or will be imminently so I can only but wish him the best and hope he proves himself.

good news, still think the quoted prices are very steep for him, but then again all players seems to be these days.
He will for sure offer us something we have been lacking for ages, so I'm looking forward to seeing him join, and if Kenny and FSG feels it's a good investment then that's bloody good with me

Let's look at the pros and cons
+ He'll offer genuine width down the left
+ Excellent crossing ability means he should bring the best out of Andy Carroll
+ Intelligent player who should link well with Gerrard, Suarez and Kuyt
+ Extremely hard working
+ Seems passionate to play for us
+ Can also play right wing
+ Consistant performer who has proven himself in the premiership over a number of years
+ Currently Villa's player of the season, ahead of Ashley Young
+ Clearly one of Kenny's top targets
- Question marks over whether he really has the ability to be considered top, top class
- Lacks flair for a top class winger
- Dribbling ability isn't the best
- We've paid a pretty high price for him
All in all, I'm pretty pleased we've signed him. It's not hard to understand what Kenny sees in him, and also sees how he is trying to bring the best out of Carroll. Is Downing better than what we already have? The answer has to be a resounding yes. So in that sense, we have to be pleased that he will strengthen the side considerably.
Now we need a left back (Cissokho would go a long way to placating those disillusioned with the Downing signing imo), centre back, reserve keeper, and backup forward. 4 more. What a summer!K ris90210

Oh well, welcome aboard. I knew we would end up paying what Villa wanted, but I suppose its what Kenny wants. My biggest worry is that if the players we are buying don't turn into successes (Downing, Henderson, Carroll), there could be financial implications on future transfer windows.Brandt - Keita - Van Dijk - Sessegnon

Well the keeper would be on a free, striker needent be a big, expensive signing. Perhaps that youngster, Niang. Left back is obviously a priority position. I don't think center back is as pressing this season, although we did bid 16mil plus for Phil Jones!! So who knows.Originally posted by Norbert Dentressangle View PostI think we'll sign a left back and that'll be it, the money pit isn't endlessK ris90210

Add Cissokho and Adam to the mix and we have naturally left footed players who can only help provide a balance to the team too - this would make a big difference.

It's not that long ago when right footed Ryan Babel was playing LM for us, then we've had Joe Cole and Milan Jovanovic, so I don't think it's right to say he adds nothing. There's Maxi, but he's no LM really. There aren't that many alternatives who would come here so willingly either. We need CL football asap so maybe the club are just being sensible by buying a 'reliable' player for a position where we are so short of quality.Originally posted by Redspin View PostAgree 100%. He's staggeringly average and adds nothing other than being able to kick with his left foot. I couldn't possibly be more underwhelmed
Basically, he's a decent player who could step up for us and be an excellent player.Trey Nyoni: countdown to stardom-2 years1year0.5 years
