Can't agree with that. As shocking as Adam was, Downing has been worse for me and Keane at least scored a few goals for us. I've never really hated a Liverpool player. I'm ashamed to say since Downing came along that has changed. I can't stand the sight of him!!

I really don't see that. Off the top of my head I could name twenty worse players who've played for LFC since we last won the title. That's not to say Downing has been good - he clearly has been very poor - it's just that we've had a lot of bad players.

Of course the fee complicates it - does Downing at £20m have to be 40 times better than Jean-Michel Ferri for £500k? - but ignoring that, there are plenty of worse players to have worn red.

His main strength was his defensive solidity. He was always **** in an attacking sense but now his defensive solidity has gone, he is **** in every sense of the term.

Oh I agree there have been worse players that have worn red. I was definitely taking the fee into consideration as I said he was our worst transfer ever. I have built up a genuine hatred of him.

As you say, there have been worse players to play for us. My reason for saying Downing is our worst transfer ever is mostly down to the fee. Its just in my recent memory, and to my knowledge, I can't think of anyone who in terms of value for money has given us less. (Keane and Aquilani come close but Downing shades it for me).

The worst kind of players for me are the cowards. He has to be one of the most cowardly, gutless players to play for us. A 17 year old boy has shown more fight and determination than him. Even when he has lost his place in the team it doesn't seem to affect his game. He still plays without heart. Maybe I am being too harsh but obviously the 20 odd million doesn't help matters...

From a playing games for us, you have to say Aquilani was the worst deal ever - but then there's Andy Carroll which could even eclipse that.

Whatever - some of the business we have done over the last 5 years has been catastrophic. I don't think there is a major club in European football that has such a catalogue of big money disasters in such a relatively short period of time

At least Andy Carroll scored in the FA Cup Semi-Final and very nearly turned the final around for us. Those were memorable moments. Downing has had next to no memorable moments. I think having Aquilani injured for 18 months is as much use as having Stewart Downing fit for 18 months. OK, maybe I am being biased because of how much I can't stand Downing.

Andy Carroll did the minimum you would expect of a striker and had the desired impact you would want from an impact sub.

As it is, he never made a telling difference, because we still lost.

The thing with Downing is he's got the attributes, he's imo not got the personality to play for a 'big team'
