I like Coates and I think is it very unfortunate that he wasn't given a proper chance to continue with his development this year.

There is very little he can do to prove his talent when he only had 6 starts and 2 sub appearances (one of them was in 85th minute vs WH so it really shouldn't count) while Carra had 11 starts and 9 sub appearances thus far.

There is no point of keeping him on the bench when BR doesn't really see him as a viable option.

Either sell him or loan him coz maintaining status quo doesn't do any good to anybody.

Did nowt to strengthen his case today!

In his defence, it's practically impossible to come in once every blue moon and be at or near your best.

Carra gets much more football. He's started 13 games this season and been brought on in 9. 22 appearances.

That was Coates 7th start and he's come off the bench three times. It's not really comparable.

It really is not as Carra also has 700+ games in red shirt in all kinds of competitions while Coates is still trying to get some experience and settle for life in PL.

I'm really disappointed about that, particularly because at the start it looked like he was going to get a proper go (i.e. Starting against City and putting in a very good shift). I definitely think he's good enough, but the clock is ticking and if Rodgers isn't prepared to give him games, he'll have to find them elsewhere, sadly.

He paid good money for him too. Might be a largish waste of money.

That's silly, Carra has actually played very well in his appearances this season by any judgement that isn't utterly biased. His reading of the game is still superb, far better I suspect than Coates ever will be in that respect. Sure there are games and oppositions you really don't want to see him against, but just like Sami was in his last season or so, Carra has been a model pro this season and contributed well when called upon

I know people can argue about Coates not getting enough games, but surely people don't want him to play ahead of Skrtel or Agger. Which relegates him only to occasional or emergency appearances, and if you're bringing someone on to shore a game up then as a manager you always should pick the old experienced head over the young and honestly still rather uncertain talent.

I've been saying it for a year now nearly, but I'm convinced something is up with Coates that makes him not the player many people seem to think he is. This "all the attributes thing" means what? He's tall and likes a tackle? Top class defending is so much about reading of the game, natural instinct for defending. I'm not sure he has that. It could be that in this style of football Coates is never going to be trustworthy enough; seems both the Kenny/Clarke regime thought so and so does Rodgers. There must be something in that more than them all missing the next big thing in defending?
I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
                    Mine angry and defrauded young?

Sebastian go? Liverpool defender Coates is wanted on loan by West Brom
                      17 Jan 2013 22:30

Baggies want to borrow under-achieving Uruguayan with a view to a permanent deal as QPR continue to track their centre-half Jonas Olsson

West Brom boss Steve Clarke wants to rescue Liverpool’s flop defender Sebastian Coates.

Clarke worked with the centre-back when he came to Anfield in a *big-money buy and thinks he can resurrect his career.

He hopes to do a deal with his old club in the next 48 hours and sign Coates on loan with a view to a full-time signing if he proves himself at the Baggies.

Coates played the full 90 minutes of Liverpool's draw with Manchester City in August, but has seen just 49 minutes of Premier League action since.

Brendan Rodgers has instead used him in the League Cup and Europa League.

Clarke knows he has big interest in central defender Jonas Olsson from QPR.

However, West Brom hope to sign Coates and will then let England Under-21 international Craig Dawson out on loan, with Bolton heading the queue for his signature.

West Brom would be a great move all round actually. We'd indirectly have Clarke back as defensive coach!

Meh not into this "with a view to a permanent deal" business. A loan would be good for Coates but I don't want him to play (permanently) for freaking West Brom! It's difficult to say but they form a part of the competition.
