I agree that many people fight their demons by themselves and end up committing suicide, but I think that anyone who makes the threat should be taken very seriously, and not instantly labelled as someone "seeking attention."
I don't ignore them I pass them onto counselling services.

But my experience is that those who threaten suicide in a dramatic fashion rarely if ever carry it out. Just my experience....

        From the Samartitans website.

MYTH: People who talk about suicide aren’t really serious and not likely to actually kill themselves.

FACT: People who kill themselves have often told someone that they do not feel life is worth living or that they have no future. Some may have actually said they want to die. Whilst it may be the case that some people talk about suicide as a way of getting the attention they need, it is very important that everyone who says they feel suicidal be treated seriously.

Truefan, I don't think it's helpful to make judgements about which people are likely to kill themselves or that those who talk about it somehow lack guts or fortitude.

Of course if the intention is to make any depressed person reading this thread feel even worse about themselves then please do carry on.

It's enough to make one wonder if academic achievement and intelligence have any correlation whatsoever.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I think if people are going to crassly discuss the ins and outs of of suicide, and those people who are unfortunate enough to have to face that horrible situation, the discussion should not be done in this thread.
              Oh I don't know.

It were better not done crassly at all.

FACT: There is a difference between stating you feel life is worthless and repeatedly claiming that you are going to kill yourself.

                  FACT: You don't pay attention

FACT: In my experience the vast majority of people who cry "suicide" repeatedly don't go onto do so.

Mate, no one wants to read your ****ing weird, insensitive hypothesis. 'In my experience...' Thanks but I'll take the word of the Samaritans on this one I think.

Very sad news. Thoughts go out to his family. Very sad for Welsh football as well - it looked like we had something of a bright (well, relatively speaking! ) future ahead. Seemed like he had so much to live for. R.I.P. Gary Speed

If we must have this kind of discussion, perhaps it could be done in the depression thread in the library. Cheers.

Are you a counsellor? What is your experience?

I have learned that you never spot the ones who kill themself. Why? The ones who moan and threaten it never do. They are just attention seekers and lack the fibre and fortitude to actually kill themself.

To actually take your life is a massive step and needs a high degree of character and fortitude. Think of trying to slash your wrists, or jump in front of a train or hand yourself. Every fibre of you stops you from doing this. To overcome this requires real determination and guts.

So those who actually commit suicide are usually those of strong character and not the type to whinge about how they are going to commit suicide.

They are usually also the type that do not and will not seek help for their problems because they have strong character and do not wish to feel weak or small.

And what causes them to kill themself? Usually because the pain of being alive is so much more unbearable than the thought of killing themself. Yes it leaves grieving loved ones behind.

But to criticise someone who commits suicide is as sick as the person who killed themself. Except one could not help it. The other is a nasty grade a little ****.
Personally i see absolutely nothing wrong with this post. As stated he is speaking from his own personal experience where he works.

IMO people are being a little over sensitive over this issue. It is a forum and truefan was just offering up his opinion.

Maybe, but this supposed to be a farewell to Gary Speed, not discussion on suicide...

Well the thread is entitled Gary Speed Dead. First post simply states 'what the ****'.

To me that's not necessarily a farewell to Gary Speed thread. Fair enough if the thread was entitled 'Gary Speed - A tribute/farewell or something but it is not.

The thought police round this place really are getting a bit much.
