I don't think for one moment that the club were surprised by Torres forcing a move. I don't know if he submitted a formal transfer request but if he did then I'm sure it was forced on him by the club, to cut down on their contractual obligations to him.Originally posted by dom9 View PostI think it is relevant because the end of that transfer window was approaching and Torres wanted out. The club decided to sell (perhaps wrongly in hindsight) and an appropriate and realistic replacement had to be identified in a short space of time.
That target was Carroll, and Newcastle bumped up the price massively knowing that everyone around them was getting desperate. We simply passed on that massive premium to Chelsea.
Yes, of course we overpaid, but we were overcompensated for Torres at the same time, which negates that to an extent.
Maybe we should have been looking at other / better targets, but this was days from the end of the transfer window. What choice was there, apart from to keep Torres?
And yes, that is what I am implying.
Anyway, whether or not there was a transfer request is a peripheral detail. It was widely believed on here that Torres would be leaving. It was also widely reported in the media and some journalists said in advance that Suarez coming would mean Torres leaving.
At best, the club lost a game of brinkmanship - at worst, they were shafted. My view though is that, if Comolli isn't the only one responsible for the cock-up, then the junior partner in the blame game has to be Dalglish. I don't think the board were in a position to overrule at the time..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

Sorry, it probably sounded like I was disagreeing with you. I wasn't, I was just expressing my depressed acceptance that we apparently adopted exactly that approach, and pointing out that no rational sound-minded individual would have thought that to be a great way to do business.Originally posted by dom9 View PostAnd yes, that is what I am implying.

Apart from the political parties has any other organisation had so many inept dickheads in positions of power as Liverpool fc over the last twenty years?!

BRENDAN Rodgers says he'd be a 'nut case' to let Andy Carroll leave Liverpool on the cheap. Whilst still accepting Carroll is unlikely to ever fit into the playing style he hopes to implement at Anfield, necessity means he can't afford to lose the £35m man without replacements coming in first.
Carroll is likely to start at Hearts tonight and Rodgers said: “I need a minimum of three strikers. Once the window shuts, that is it until January.
“I have got Luis Suarez, Fabio Borini and Andy Carroll.
“I would need to be a nut case to even consider at this moment to let Andy Carroll go out, unless there are other solutions for that. At the moment there isn’t.
“Andy has been working well. He knows the situation, like the rest of the group do and we will take it from there.”
Asked about a possible loan deal, Rodgers said: “Absolutely no chance – and certainly not to Newcastle.
“Newcastle got £35m for this player last year. To even consider wanting to take him on loan is a liberty really.
“It is all speculation. I would be here all night if I was to answer questions on speculation, but we have got a very small squad as it is.
“We have lost a lot of players this summer and I hope we will be able to bring some in. I had a target list of players I wanted.
“That was always conditional because of the monies that had been paid out here.
“The club is working very hard behind the scenes to manage that process to allow us to get some players in, but in terms of depth, it’s nowhere near where I would want it to be.
“I can’t wave a magic wand to bring players in and get players out.
“There is still a wee bit of time left and hopefully come the end of August we will be ready to go on with the group that we want.”
Carroll picked up a minor injury in training this week, but Rodgers is convinced he will start against Hearts.
“We need to have a look at Andy," he added. "He is due to start but he has felt a slight twinge, so we have had it looked at and scanned. If he is available and then fit, he will start.”
Teenage striker Raheem Sterling could also be handed his first Liverpool start with Suarez - and skipper Steven Gerrard - having been rested for the trip to Tynecastle.

Among other things.Originally posted by DannyMan2006 View PostI think the club had the FFP ruling in mind. That said, we should have gone for other targets.
I think they wanted to send the clear statement of intent as new owners at the same time that any players sales will be reinvested into the squad in contrast to H & G.
The problem was that we waited too long until the last day to let Torres go and we haven't had time to go after any other targets after Llorente plan failed.
In the hindsight yes we shouldn't have done what we have done but intentions were good but our choice of a striker and price tag associated with him was a terrible decision.Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club
