And it is looking increasingly likely that Andy Carroll will be sold to raise funds.

England striker Carroll arrived in Boston on Tuesday to join his team-mates on their North American tour, following his post-Euro 2012 holiday.

Aware that keeping a £35m player on the bench is not going to work for long, Rodgers will look to sell the big Geordie.

Liverpool could cut the fee to as little as £15m to allow their pursuit of Allen and Fulham's attacking midfielder Clint Dempsey. Mirror

Assuming Torres cost us £20m, the balance is £5million in fact we are into negative figures if you include salary and agent fees. We've been ****ed over by ourselves - simple.
Aren't you forgetting the four good seasons in a red shirt, 100 games and 65 goals and the huge increase in shirt sales all over the world and on top of all that he was great to watch, That's what the £20 million was for.

You did an accounting analysis which was totally incorrect and I just corrected it. £20M is £20M pounds. It's a liability. Unfortunately company accounts don't record the number of games, goals and the entertainment an individual provides.

FYI - whilst Torres was at the club, we changed shirts twice but we have sold more Warrior shirts now than in any of the seasons when a new shirt was released with Torres at the club

Brendan Rodgers is planning further talks with Andy Carroll and believes the Liverpool striker has been the subject of "unfair criticism".

Carroll's future at Anfield appears to be uncertain amid suggestions the England international would struggle to fit in with Rodgers' playing style.

Former club Newcastle have expressed an interest in re-signing Carroll, who cost Liverpool £35million 18 months ago, but has struggled to make a consistent impact on Merseyside.

Rodgers has already insisted that he will not let Carroll leave on loan, but is prepared to consider offers that come in for any players.

However, the new Liverpool boss has sought to play down suggestions that Carroll would be unable to adapt to his philosophy after describing the 23-year-old as a "terrific talent".

"Andy is a terrific young player," said Rodgers. "I had a brief chat with all the lads and over the next couple of weeks I'll be able to speak to them with more confidence and on a one-to-one basis. There is no doubt he is a terrific talent. There has been a lot of unfair criticism aimed towards Andy.

"He is a player who can play in a number of styles and it was a wee bit unfair on him (for people) to say he couldn't fit into the way I would want to play.

"For me, your game is based on your players, the players you have. I am here to win games.

"We've got a number of very, very talented players in the group, of which Andy is one."link

I wonder if that means he may be thinking about keeping him for a plan B. The only trouble with that is that he will want to be part of plan A.

If that means he works hard to convince him then I don't see that as a problem at all. Some have gone so far as to call it squad depth.

I think he may keep him till Christmas depending on available funds. We need at least 4 strikers.

Rodgers may have decided bringing in 3 new strikers to Play with Suarez is just to much risk, Keep Andy till christmas only downside is that his value is about as high as its going to get at the moment imo.

Whether it means hes keeping him or not for whatever plan I'm quite encouraged by those quotes

My one fear about Rodgers has been this insistence that he will immediately impose a set style and will push that style irrespective of the players he has

For me any change to reach his ideal system / style of play will have to be gradual and we will have to evolve a gradual change in style

If he was to change and enforce his ideal style of play immediately he'd have to replace a lot of our players and its clear that we are not in a position to do that in one fell swoop

I'd be disappointed if we sold Carroll just as he was showing signs of form, especially if we are not going to replace him with a better CF.

He's not worth £35m but who is? And its hardly his fault we over paid for him. He has to be a good option for us next season - so long as we don't resort to just lumping it up to him. We played good non-hoofball when we had Crouchy, so I'd hope for something similar.

To be fair to him, he's said on a couple of occasions that he won't do that. He tried that at Reading and has cited it as a reason why things didn't work for him there.

I actually think we have a core of players that should be pretty suited to Rodgers' style though, so the transition shouldn't take as long as it might have done. Gerrard, Lucas, Henderson, Agger, Johnson, Reina, Bellamy are all very good technically. We've added Borini and will hopefully soon add Allen, both of whome should speed up the process.

A quality winger who can make a difference and I think we'll compete for a top 4 spot.

I can't decide what I think about this. My instinct is towards evolution but in someways I think we might be better off in the long run trying to play the way Rodgers wants and seeing who adapts.

I'm still not convinced that all parts of his game plan are as far removed from the way we worked last season as some make out. The main difference would seem to be de-emphasising crossing and really going for pressing. Not sure how well a half arsed pressing game would work.

I'd be delighted if we kept Andy, it really doesn't matter to me how much he cost. That's in the past, and right now he's worth to us more as an asset in the team than as an outgoing messy transfer at a knockdown price which will also require wages compensation for the entire duration of his contract and it does not guarantee us a better replacement.

If he stays, I'm pretty sure he'll win a place in the first team. Borini is not a better player, and I have no doubt Carroll can fit in here with the style of play Rodgers is aiming to implement. All these long balls have only hurt Carroll, he can play it on the ground well, and has shown that in the 2nd half of the season. People like to forget.

                          Keep Carroll!

I think the pressing part is the first bit of his system he will look to implement

No matter what if you win possession of the ball back quickly you will be better off

I'm not convinced that this total possession game will be implemented straight away

From the way he talks he sees them as interconnected - i.e. you use possession to rest to allow greater pressing. I'm not sure how great a change it would be - only small changes in whether you look to cross the ball I suspect make a big difference to your ball retention.
