Liverpool have since insisted Carroll will not be allowed to go out on loan and are understood to be holding out for around €25.5 million with West Ham and Fulham also having been linked with the Gateshead-born frontman.

However, Pardew told BBC Radio Newcastle: “\[Reading chairman] John Madejski used to say to me about certain players, ‘Just wipe your nose and move on’, and I think \[Liverpool] are going to have to do that with Andy.

“I think it was obvious as soon as Brendan went into Liverpool that Andy’s time was going to have to be somewhere else. I think it’s quite right we’re involved in that. Whether he comes here, is something that I will take or I will leave. It’s a lot of money for Mike \[Ashley, Newcastle owner], although we’ll obviously be getting a big upside in terms of what we sold him for, and we’ve got three great strikers here already. But of course as the manager, I want the best players I can get.”

Torres cost £20 million and he was sold for £50 million

Therefore a profit of £30 million

Then we speculated the profit + £5 million from the kitty on Carroll

so now we are down £5 million on the deal

So say we now sell him for £10 million we are now up £5 million.

      Yes or no ?
no. dont know the split for Torres but andy/agent took 15% of the 35million
and i am sure there are many other costs involved.

the headline fee would never be what the club receive

It winds me up when people start doing accounting analysis with bollocks such as "we actually got Carroll for free plus £15m on top". It's all cobbles and is incorrect anyway as people disgard the original money invested in wages and transfer fees - in this case the fee LFC initially paid to acquire Torres. As Cream and Dan have said - we paid/wasted £35M. The whole whole Carroll saga and the sums involved is surreal

The whole Carroll for free + £15m is complete bollocks. We got one of the highest transfer fees in history for Torres and spunked most all of it. That said, I don't think decisions should be made trying to recoup the £35m. That's already spent. We have the player and he's worth a certain amount now based on what others are willing to pay and whatever we believe Carroll's future could be here. If we can get more than that we should sell. Less and we should keep him and see if he's really worth what we think he might be.

If you're gonna talk accounting, and criticise others for not knowing what they are talking about, why isn't anybody talking about amortisation?
              Oh I don't know.

Ha ha, because I'm not an accountant! Although I do believe there is an amortisation calculator

In any case, if we bring amortisation into the equation then we would need to know the loan amount, installments and when those installments were due to be paid. I wonder if they fix the transfer fees of players when they pay by installments over a period of time?

And in the case of Andy Carroll, I'm sure all of the transfer fee was settled in one go so I doubt amortisation is involved there. I just realised if you factor in amortisation, we are losing out on even more money than we realised even if we sell him for £20M as the fee we paid for him is actually higher now.

Well, if we knew the facts, then that would obviously eliminate the need for all this guesswork, as long as someone knew how to interpret them and explain to the rest of us dullards.

BTW, amortisation is not linked to the installments used to pay for an asset, but the declining value of that asset over the term of the contract.
                    Oh I don't know.
