Union Jack - the flag for the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland:Originally posted by Nigey View PostYou're confusing me here mate.

Cross of St George - the flag for England:

The British Empire would have used the former when conquering the world.
The latter has only become popular since the 1990s.Oh I don't know.

Nationalism is bad thing, think you're confusing it with patriotism.Originally posted by Rich View PostAs usual the minority spoil it for others.
Personally, we should, as a nation, we proud of our flag. We should see it more and we should all be a little bit nationalistic and have a pride in our country.
Unfortunately a lot of this stuff has been corrupted.
Not personally a fan of that either.

Agree totally.Originally posted by Nigey View PostWhy would you be nationalistic about your country though? Your identity is personal surely, that is, what you've lived through and experiences in your life. Waving flags can be seen as aggressive depending of where you come from. Imagine waving a US flag in Iraq for instance. The St. George flag is synonymous with England's former all conquering colonial past.
That's why I can't be bothered with International football as a whole. I watch it, but minus all the jingoistic claptrap.
I'm me ,happen to be born in Ireland but it makes no difference to who I am,its just a piece of land. Seen very little to be proud of with Ireland and those running it in the past either. Patricks day does my head in and the Irish football team are exactly that,a football team consisting of players representing Ireland who I can choose to support if I wish. Many of them aren't even Irish!
Each to their own but nationalism is not for me.
