Something that occurred to me the other day (and it may be minor) but the way England and Italy approach friendlies is vastly different. Italy are usually utter ****e in friendlies but largely disregard the result. We always seem to take them for what they are; a chance to try out systems, players, tactics, etc where as friendly results always seem to be incredibly important for the English.

I was talking with some die hard England fans on Monday and they constantly repeated the fact they'd hardly lost an international in two years and had beaten Portugal, Germany, etc in that time.

I think this not only adds to the overhyping of the side but come tournament time, they aren't adaptable or prepared properly.

The closest I can remember to friendlies being used in this way by England was under Terry Venables. He tried out various players in a new system and by the time Euro 96 came around, he had the right players for the right system.

Just my opinion of course.

England are too concerned with winning the World Cup, and not just getting kids to play football. They will naturally follow if children are encouraged and given the right coaching.

The FA needs to subsides the cost of UEFA licences, we dont have coaches because its too expensive.

Not sure if this should be in the Spurs section or here but for me Harry Kane is one of the most difficult players to figure out. He seems to have none of the skills you'd expect from a top player yet his numbers over the past the past two years suggest otherwise. His performance vs Iceland the other night though......

He looked **** in all the games he played but like you say his goals and play for Spurs looks totally different.

Perhaps playing a system to suit him if we are gonna keep him as the focal point needs to be addressed , or bin him off to be a sub all the time.

I don't want to diss on Carra but, like Gary Nev, he hasn't got a fecking clue what's wrong with English football. Look at Gary Nev's contribution as Hodgson's number 2. These articles touch on the symptoms of the problem but no one can explain why the roots of football in this country are throroughly rotted through.

I don't buy carraghers article either- if it's to do with academies and Prima donnas then why have the Italian & German academy generation continued on with how their countries always make themselves hard to beat usually making the semis or finals.

carraghers article preaches to the converted- this is exactly what the average daily mail reader would put it down to as well- 'we used to be 'ard, not nowadays though'

What did the generation before the academy generation achieve?? Nothing of note. Where is the correlation between being able to book a dentist appointment and play a good game of football? Is it likely to result in causation?This is the sort of rhetoric that makes so many ex English footballers seem like morons. The whole mentality is boring and irrelevant.

England are quite simply over rated and lacking in game intelligence. In this tournament in particular they lacked the ability to finish/create chances in the final third. I do think there is a fear factor involved with England. The pressure is huge but then so is it in Germany and Italy.

A great coach always gets more out of players than a charlatan/fraud,

Iceland and Wales are prime examples of this , they play to a system and stick to it

Our wonder manager kept throwing forwards on all the time to finally have five people in a line.

Anyone remember benitez introducing Hamann at half time when 3-0 down to turn our fortunes around.

Klopp / Mourinho / Guardiolo etc etc would have one us that game and I bet you Kane and Vardy would be on the bench and we would have control of midfield as this is where the battle is normally won on a pitch.

Midfield three of Alli / Rooney and Dier has not steel to it at all.

I agree, but the comparison with Wales and Iceland doesn't work so well. England can't follow their approach, it only works if teams think they can win against them and try to do so. England hardly ever face that.
