That's the thing,at the time of the Suarez incident a lot of people said that even though he meant nothing sinister in what he said to Evra the use of the Spanish word for black was just plain unacceptable. Could you argue using that logic that the same thing with the word monkey in the presence of black people is equally unacceptable. Suarez was vilified while Hodgson is defended almost universally.

I could see that using humour would be a way of lightening the mood and maybe reducing tension but they were already a goal up at half-time.

What I can't really see is how the link between the joke and the tactical instruction can be viewed as anything but tenuous. As a way of getting across to Smalling what he wanted him to do...wtf? The guy is clearly an idiot and should be given a ten year contract.

Some journalist was on talksport saying he'd spoken to one of the players who says that the official version is nothing like what actually happened - that he was offended and their was much swearing involved.
