Whilst England have hardly played scintilating football (who has) they find themselves in the 1/4 finals. I think this game v. Italy is a real make or break game for Roy. Win it, and you would have to class Semi Finals (or beyond) as a real success. Lose at England have just hit par. no better or worse than expected.

What Roy has succesfully managed to do (by either luck or judgement) is extinguish the hopes of the nations media, his reception has been totally luke warm, the reception to his performances likewise to the point that failure is not really a problem. This has allowed the team the ability to perform without the weight of expectation, and has seen a remarkably relaxed looking England camp.

In some ways this is genius. Since I was born England have always suffered from being over hyped pre every tournament. Not this one. Personally I think England will fail against Italy, and that the Italians will have too much savvy for old Roy - they can totally beat him at his own game. But you never know.

For the Record, I'm saying 1-1 with England going out on Penalties. It wouldn't be a summer without England losing on pens.

If England WIN on pens, well we may be about to see something quite remarkable, and I for one would be removing myself from every device that can provide a news or media update.
    Does that include here?

    If so....

I think you have a good point about the expectations thing. Set the bar low so that any positive outcome is seen as an achievement.

The masochist within me (amplified by our 2011-12 season) wouldn't mind seeing the old duffer in the semi-finals haha.

It most certainly does. Could be the silver lining to the cloud of England winning eh.

Something Capello would have achieved with great ease too and still been under pressure.

I also can’t believe you are buying into the media hype of thinking he deserves credit for playing down hopes. That’s fine when things are going ok on the pitch, everyone is happy to think they are overachieving, but once England go out lets see how the post mortem compares.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

He's done well so far results wise, there's no point us trying to argue otherwise.

I'm still 100% convinced he'll get found out soon enough though. It'll all end in tears

Hodgson has done well, it ain't pretty but he has England solid and hard to beat. It may be negative but it seems to be effective. Having watched Italy i think England will beat them.

Sorry but to me he is still a slabbery, old, jowley, fraud that has hoodwinked the Nation with his crap football and dinosaur tactics.

Now there are glimmers of "he's done well" and he has "the team working as a unit" bollocks appearing on this site.

He is and always will be a festering sore on our history and I will always despise his scrotum looks and his demeaning rhetoric.

the question to ask really is "would we have expected Cappello to have got to the quarter final stage?" The answer is a resounding YES infact if we hadn't got to at least this stage under Cappello it would be viewed as a huge failure in the press & most of the country.

Under Hodgson we've so far made it to our minimum requirement of the quarter final, it's being lauded as a huge acheivement in the press and waxing lyrically about how he's come in and it seems managed to do what nobody expected and got us through the group FFS

Shows that being in the old boys brigade (Hodgson) and not being a Johnny Foreigner (Cappello) gives the press an entirely different outlook on what you've actuall acheived!
