The whole statement was a bit bizarre.

Even if asked directly about it his response should have been a refusal to dignify it.

Denmark defender Simon Kjaer told by his dad to come back from Wembley with Steven Gerrard's shirt.

Denmark defender Simon Kjaer is “on a mission” to get Steven Gerrard’s shirt - under orders from his dad.

His father, Jorn, and whole family are lifelong Liverpool fans and Kjaer is desperate to swap shirts with the England captain.

Kjaer even describes Gerrard as a “special character” who commands the “highest respect” in world football.

He said: “For the first time in my career I have to go to another player and ask for his shirt - and that’s a bit embarrassing, really.

“My father and the rest of my family are huge Liverpool supporters, and my father has literally forced me to ask for Steven Gerrard’s jersey after the game.

“So I am a man with a mission - also after the game.”

Lille defender Kjaer, who has been targeted by Tottenham and Manchester United in the past, has played against some of the world’s biggest names, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

But Kjaer, who remains a self-confessed Liverpool nut, says he has never asked for their jerseys but insists that Gerrard is something special.

“I have never done that before, because normally you just exchange jerseys with the guy you play directly against,” said Kjaer.

“I’m pretty much down to earth with full focus on football and not easy to impress - a player and not a fan.

“But I must say that Steven Gerrard is a very special character and player who deserves the highest respect from anyone in the world of football.”

Kjaer, nicknamed Le Viking by the French media, was named Danish Player of the Year at just 20 ahead of Nicklas Bendtner and Daniel Agger but admits missing out on this summer’s World Cup is a massive setback.

He is relishing the chance to play against England and admitted he would like to play in the Premier League one day.

He added: “The England game is a great test for us against a big football nation even though sadly for us not a test before the World Cup.

“Since my debut I have been a part of qualifying for and playing in both the World Cup in South Africa and the Euros, so I feel very strange not going to the World Cup this summer.

“Like I’m really missing out on something big here. We finished number two after Italy in our qualifying group and only missed out on the play offs due to an overtime goal by Italy, but then again we only won one of our five home games in the group, and that was obviously very disappointing for us.

“I am enjoying the success with Lille and enjoying the French league right now, and I understand why the Premier League clubs pick so many players from this league.”

“Ligue 1 is much more physical than Serie A and even the Bundesliga, but of course not as much as in the Premier League.

“So I see the French league as a good stepping stone to an English club. The Premier League is the toughest league in the world with some of the biggest clubs in football and a great depth in quality.”

I reckon Shaggys squad won't be far off what it is, except I expect Cleverley, Milner and another winger maybe Lennon or Townsend.

              5 of our lot starting.

Hart; Johnson, Cahill, Smalling, Cole; Gerrard, Henderson; Wilshere, Rooney, Sterling; Sturridge.

Weird conundrum of wanting them all to do well individually but wanting Hodgson and England to fail miserably.

There's no way at this point that Shaw is a better option than Cole or Baines.
