I think increasingly the fans of the big PL clubs don't really care about England, the fans of midtable and lower PL clubs care more and the fans of lower league clubs probably care most. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

If you look at the attendances for England games played up north you can see there's plenty of support there too. It's not incompatible with supporting Liverpool.
I don't support the English national team for a handful or reasons, and I fail to see why I should give much of a **** whether others do or don't. It just doesn't have any particular importance to me. Baffles me that it obviously does to some people.Last edited by Red_Polo; 09-03-14, 11:40 PM.Like blood on iron

To be fair, back in the old days England matches were always played at Wembley and it was generally seen as a southern England kind of thing. If you were up north you were well out of it really. Things are a bit different now which means that you get good attendances out of London as it's an easy day out if you're near where they are playing (at smaller venues I might add). I'd watch England at Anfield for example.
Sadly the way we look at players is a bit different now as well. When they were kind of better versions of us you could warm to them a lot more. Now they're generally a shower of *******s who earn so much that we have very little connection with them at all, which is why the only England players we tend to love are our own. For a lot of people England players are now seen as grossly overpaid self-appreciating and entitled underachievers who let us down on a consistent basis at international level, so why should we support them at all? Plus it's very difficult to get all tribal at international level now, it's much easier to differentiate yourself from the people down the road and that's where a lot of the fun of it comes from.
I'm not a great England supporter as you can probably tell, but I suppose I am in the live and let live camp for those who want to.Experimental music, Metropolitan foodstuffs, Mexican wrestler art, London suburbia, wry whimsy, fansy pants flim flam lad

I just get wound up by dismissive attitudes towards other supporters.Originally posted by Red_Polo View PostIf you look at the attendances for England games played up north you can see there's plenty of support there too. It's not incompatible with supporting Liverpool.

I feel jaded and disinterested about England- always overhyped to sell papers and tv subscriptions and full of players you're used to disliking week in, week out.
But deciding you're better than a set of supporters, any supporters but particularly when the deciding factor is it's London or places not close enough to a premiership team, is something that gets me riled.

Definitely. Perhaps wasn't clear - I can accept criticism of the rationale of some as supporters/non-supporters, but I don't understand the absolute distaste for which of those camps someone falls into regardless of the reasons. There are many and varied valid reasons someone could decide to support, or not support, a team.
Agree with Venton on some of the historical geographical differences behind England support.Like blood on iron

England is traditionally a bunch of cockney ******s and the supporters are traditionally a bunch of cockney ******s. Why should we give a ****? It's not there for us, it's there for the cockney ******s. Apologies to those who think that "cockney" is a very specific term relating to a small number of people.

I give that little of a **** about England that I only found out yesterday when reading the Sturridge thread that they won vs Denmark I had assumed it had finished 0-0
