A lot of players who have had loans that they credit with developing them (Beckham and Ferdinand are the two that come to mind) only played <10 games, being on loan for only part of a season. Which seems not so far from how we are treating Robinson.

I also think there is a wide variety of player personalities and positions to take into account.

All that said if we feel someone else would make good right back cover then a loan could be good for Wilson. Still not sure that we have that and if he will get games with us then I think we would be as good an environment to learn in as a loan team. We can always loan him out in January if he's not getting games.
I think the system will obviously work better in some cases than others, some players may spend 3 seasons out on loan others two or one. Obviously it depends on the team they go to and how much they play etc.

But my biggest problem with the way we have been doing things is that we haven't built on experience gained. Take for instance Shelvey at Blackpool that was a good loan move for him and he did well there, since we brought him back what has he done? He's played the odd game here and there but spent most of the time doing nothing, in effect we have wasted that year of his development. Had we looked to loan him out again, coming off the back of a good spell at Blackpool there was a decent chance some PL club would have taken him for a year, and assuming he got game time and the manager wasn't a Hodgson-style dinosaur he would have come back a better player.

Now if the player is struggling at a lower level and after a couple of spells aren't looking like improving we have to look at the reasons why and will be in a better position to decide their future. With regards to Beckham and Ferdinand etc, I think there are two things to consider 1) they were both very good players and 2) IMO the game has moved on since then I think there is a lot more competition for places in the side at most clubs. Comparisons between Robinson and Beckham etc was that Beckham after coming back from loan went straight into the first team, I don't see that happening with Robinson. If he is going to be sat on the bench or playing for the reserves because we feel he isn't ready to challenge Enrique then IMO it's best he goes out on loan again.

Shelvey got time in the early games and played all preseason. He lost his place when he was sent off against utd. Did he get injured? Anyway, he went ****.

True, but IMO this goes back to us looking at what he did at Blackpool and thinking we should play he, clearly it then became obvious that he wasn't ready, IMO at this point we should have looked into getting him a loan move to get the experience and continue developing, the time spent here and the little game time he has had means that his development hasn't continued.

Liverpool's Andre Wisdom in transfer talks with Wigan over loan move

Young defender needs more game time and Latics can offer him plenty as they compete in Championship and Europa League

Liverpool starlet Andre Wisdom is in talks with Owen Coyle's Wigan about a loan move - after Brendan Rodgers cleared his exit.

England Under-21 defender Wisdom is wanted by Coyle as part of the Latics' push for promotion back to the Premier League amid a massive fixture list of 46 Championship game and Europa League group-phase play.

Coyle has been trailing Wisdom for weeks but Rodgers has only given the move a green light after lining up new defenders for the Anfield giants.

Aly Cissokho has joined on loan from Valencia, while Sporting Lisbon's Tiago Ilori and Paris Saint-Germain's Mamadou Sakho are close to signing.

Wisdom can play right-back and centre-half, and Coyle will give him game time.

Emerging Kop hero Daniel Sturridge is also vouching for the move.

Sturridge he has a special relationship with Coyle from their time together at Bolton, where the striker played on loan from Chelsea in 2011, and has told pal Wisdom to join the Scot at the DW.

A loan move would be good move for him as he will get regular football and its close to liverpool.

Decent move, especially with the Europa games. Cant imagine a premier league team giving games to a defender that young.

Good cameo today aswell bar his usual dodgy throw ins!

Yep makes perfect sense. Close to home, no personal upheaval, just go and play football.

The championship is one of the most competitive leagues around so he'll get a lot of good exposure in that league.

Excellent move as he's more likely to play regularly in Championship. He needs games to develop. Good potential but raw, he'll come back a wiser, better defender.

Seems a little strange that we are letting him go given Johnsons injury, surely his introduction today indicates he is our second choice right back, Flanagan isn't good enough at this level.

Kelly will be ahead of him.

I'd forgotten about Kelly, how far is he from regaining fitness?
