In principal I see what they're trying to do:

a) Butland is young and would probably ask for wages a lot lower than Pepe's
b) He would probably do a decent job for us, remember Pepe in the last couple of seasons has been prone to errors. (although in my eyes one of the best keepers in the league still.)
c) Pepe is aging.
d) Selling Pepe for lets say £15 million and bringing Butland in for £5 million would free up £10 million, plus possibly £60k per week wages.
e) Butland can only improve, and if we get him in now can learn from Pepe.

Now I'm not saying I completely agree with this, but I see their logic. Maybe in a couple of years time Pepe might be a disaster and Butland might rise and fulfill his potential. Leaving us with a half decent aging keeper, and missing the boat on potentially Englands no1.

I wouldn't begrudge if we signed Butland, and I wouldn't begrudge Pepe if he left. After all he deserves to win at least one league title (as long as its not the premier league with anyone other than us)
