Manchester United have turned down the chance to sign Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid and Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala.
Manager David Moyes believes neither are a priority position as he pursues a midfield general.
Meanwhile, Benfica have joined Besiktas in the pursuit of United left-back Alex Buttner - the Dutchman could be allowed to leave on loan.
Liverpool are in advanced discussions with Anzhi regarding a move for the 25-year-old Willian and remain confident of landing him. Old Trafford was believed to be Willian’s preferred destination but he told ESPN he would be open to a move to Liverpool.
Earlier this week he said: ‘There was the Manchester City bid that was turned down. Now I’m waiting for a new bid to arrive in the next days from a few clubs, like Liverpool. If it’s really Liverpool, then it is surely a great club. I’m hopeful and very calm, just waiting for the best.
‘England is my goal. I like the Premier League very much, I enjoy the English football and certainly, if that happens, it will be very good for me and for my image.’
Moyes has been under pressure to land a big name this summer with former charges Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini his two top targets.
United keeper Sam Johnstone is joining Yeovil on loan after their other option Wayne Hennessey of Wolves injured his hamstring while on international duty with Wales.
