Can't remember what the rule was. Thought it was always away goals after extra time so the home side always got the extra 30 minutes in front of their own fans
I really don’t like penalty shootouts. They’re just a gimmick and not a fitting way to decide a game of football, particularly an important one. This will lead to more of the so I don’t approve.

Ach come on? You are taking contrary to a new level.
Not a fitting way for fans or players? For neutrals there is nothing better (especially if it's a **** match and you feel you deserve some reward) and as hateful as it is when involved, the feeling of winning is incredible (2005 )
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?
Well my argument would be along the lines that it’s not football. It’s a contrived mini game. The whole premise of competitive football is to establish which team is most effective at playing football, not the bonus mini game. Penalty shootouts are barely more relevant as an representation of the game than a sprint race decider would be. They’ve been around since the 70s so we’ve all grown up with them, so we don’t think about how silly they are. The more games determined by the playing football bit the better imo.
Having said that, sprint race deciders would be pretty cool actually.

Nope.
It was away goals at the end of the 2nd leg. So if you drew 2-2 away from home and then 1-1 at home, you'd win the tie after 90mins of the second leg.

In theory, if one team is 'more effective' at playing football, then it shouldn't go to penalties. That's also the point of e/t, to give one team further opportunity to prove they are better. If they still don't take it, well the match has to be decided some way, unless we go back down the replay route or start sharing trophies again.
Is goal difference or away goals a better way of separating equal teams? If we beat Man City 1-0 and United beat West Brom 2-0 to overtake us on goal difference, does that make them better than us? Winners and losers have to be decided somehow and I refuse to believe that there is a single football fan out there who doesn't enjoy watching penalties.

I don’t really understand this. I’d You are talking about a league then it’s all about the position at the end of the season. And goal difference is a good measure once everyone has played everyone.
Of course, there will always be stalemates that need resolving, but that should be via parameters relating to playing football where possible. Away goals reduced the reliance on contrived mini games so was a net positive. It’s odd that they are going to remove it just as crowds start coming back and making a difference again, but kept it when teams were playing in empty soulless stadia.
And whether people enjoy it is neither here nor there to me. Some people enjoy a blast of Eye of the Tiger when their team scores, but those people can burn in hell.

I was highlighting that winners and losers have to be decided somehow and it doesn't always reflect the best team. I tried simplifying an example by using one match, but there are other ways of looking at it. United putting 7 or 8 away against someone like Southampton to bloat their GD, doesn't necessarily mean they were the best team over the other 37 games.
An we are consumers of the product and ultimately are paying to be entertained. It's foolish imo to dismiss people's enjoyment.
