Somebody should have walked for the colossal **** up that was Mario/Lambert/Butler. 30m plus 200k a week wages wasted.

That's true, with the £12m or so mooted from Sunderland we'd probably have had about £25-30m to spend on a striker last year instead of Balotelli which could have made a difference. I'm happy to blame last season on Borini But I would have thought that all that having happened Borini was probably still the option that suited our style of play most, so would have been IMO the most sensible option, leaving him out as punishment seems a little like cutting your nose off to spite your face. Whether it would have worked better or worse is just speculation now I suppose.

Liverpool transfer news: West Brom to bid £3m for Rickie Lambert
England striker has been told he can leave Anfield after failing to break into the first team since arriving last summer

Tony Pulis will make a £3million bid ‎for Rickie Lambert this week as he steps up his search for signings at West Bromwich Albion.

Pulis has prioritised a move for the Liverpool striker and will table a firm offer when he returns from the club's pre-season tour of the United States on Tuesday.

Lambert has been told he can leave Anfield barely 12 months after his £4million move from Southampton and will be offered the chance to resurrect his career at the Hawthorns.

Pulis is growing frustrated with the lack of signings and spoke with chairman Jeremy Peace in a 90-minute conference call on Sunday, in a bid to start making some headway on targets.

The only summer arrival so far has been the £1million capture of James McClean from Wigan Athletic and Pulis is keen to make at least one signing before the weekend.

Lambert, 33, has now emerged as one of West Brom's ‎leading targets and a bid is expected in the next few days.

Albion believe £3million will be enough to land the England international, who was sent to an Adelaide hospital over the weekend after suffering an injury in training.

Albion remain confident of striking a deal with Nottingham Forest for winger Michail Antonio, despite having a £5million offer rejected last week.

Pulis has turned to Antonio after being quoted £10million for QPR's Matty Phillips and is hopeful of progress this week in his attempt to sign the former Sheffield Wednesday wideman.

Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert set for talks with West Bromwich Albion

            • Tony Pulis keen on 33-year-old who has fallen down Anfield pecking order
            • Lambert has also attracted interest from newly-promoted Norwich

            Press Association
            Tuesday 21 July 2015 12.12 BST

West Brom are expected to step up their interest in Liverpool’s Rickie Lambert with talks set to take place between all parties this week.

A deal could be wrapped up in the coming days with Albion’s transfer activity expected to gather pace now manager Tony Pulis has returned from the US following a three-game tour.

Pulis is hunting a new striker to help Saido Berahino, with question marks remaining over record signing Brown Ideye’s future following a disappointing first season in England.

Lambert, who has also attracted interest from newly-promoted Norwich, also struggled to make an impact at Liverpool after a move from Southampton last summer with the 33-year-old scoring just three times in 36 appearances.

He rejected a deadline day move to Aston Villa in February with the forward insisting he did not want to leave Liverpool after just half a season. The England international will fall further down the pecking order at Anfield with the impending arrival of Christian Benteke, as the Aston Villa striker set to complete a £32.5m transfer.

Pulis is overhauling his squad this summer with QPR’s Matt Phillips and Arsenal’s Serge Gnabry on his radar. Michail Antonio remains a target despite West Brom having a £5m bid rejected by Nottingham Forest last week. It is understood the Baggies remain confident they can land the winger.

Meanwhile, Pulis has warned James McClean he must protect his reputation after his snub of the English flag last week. McClean refused to face the cross of St George during the national anthem while on Albion’s pre-season tour of US. The winger, signed from Wigan this summer, is from a republican background in Northern Ireland and has also refused to wear a Remembrance Day poppy out of respect for people killed on Bloody Sunday.

“Obviously there has been a stigma around him and he doesn’t need to start that up again,” Pulis told the Wolverhampton Express & Star.

“So hopefully we’ve nipped it in the bud and we can get on with our things and he can get on with his things. I didn’t see the situation but I had a chat with him and explained what we do as a football club and the way we are and I think he’s fine with everything.

“We’ve got Northern Ireland lads in the squad and he’s been absolutely fantastic with them, and the way he’s mixed and integrated with the group has been brilliant. I’ve seen the pictures and he’s got to turn towards the flag like everybody else has and he recognises that.”

Hope this gets wrapped up quickly, followed by Balotelli and Borini.

If we get £3m or above for Lambert it'll be brilliant business as he's been awful. One of the slowest players I've ever seen

Will be a good move for Ricky. Hope he gets it and gets back to first team football. Despite what people might say he's lived the dream that anyone of us would jump at the chance to which he did. He's give his all for the club when he's been asked and you can't ask for anymore.

Totally agree. It's not his fault we signed him & we don't play to his strengths.

Yeah, nothing against the guy at all, he's still a good player and has a great story, he even managed to score some goals but just not right for us.

he looked a very dejected figure in Adelaide when the team where warming up.

This thread started so optimistically. It still is, but now people are hoping he leaves.

He was never right for us so I don't think the outcome has been that surprising. Was dealt some **** cards by Rodgers though.

I don't think anyone thought it would go as badly as it has. At the start I think he was just trying too hard, but essentially he just didn't fit in.

It's a shame, but if I was him, I wouldn't regret it. He's lived the life of a Liverpool player for one season and now he can go and finish off his career somewhere else.

Well done Rickie, you still lived the dream.
