Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has been charged by the Football Association for a post on social media which appeared to contain anti-Semitic and racist references.
The player has until 18:00 GMT on 15 December to respond to the charge.
A Liverpool club spokesman said: "We acknowledge the FA's decision and the player will work through the process to answer the charge.
"While that process is on-going the club will make no further comment."
More to follow.
Mario Balotelli has been charged by the Football Association for a post on social media which appeared to contain anti-Semitic and racist references.
The Liverpool striker posted a picture, which included Nintendo computer game character Super Mario, before quickly deleting it earlier this week.
The 24-year-old Italian tweeted to deny the text of the post was offensive, before then apologising.

An FA Statement read: "It is alleged the Liverpool player breached FA Rule E3[1] in that his posting was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper.
"It is further alleged that this is an 'Aggravated Breach' as defined by FA Rule E3[2] as it included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race and/or nationality and/or religion or belief." BBC More to follow.
I don't understand what the problem is here? The FA have a difficult job to do with all this media ****e and they have to draw a line somewhere. We all agree it was a stupid thing to post, so ask yourself why you think it was stupid?
The guy is a bellend for putting himself in this position. The FA have to act.
Amazing how quickly the FA seem to be acting on the Mario stuff. The Malky Mackay and Iain Moody "investigation" is still ongoing some three or four months after it began.
Dave Whelan's comments about Jews, Irish and more have to date only seen him given more time to explain himself after he forwarded a letter to the FA.
Really don't see how what those three said is any less clear cut than what Balotelli put on his instagram page and I fail to see how what they said could be deemed less offensive.
Not to mention Richard Scudmore remaining on as the Chief Executive of the Premier League after he was caught sending offensive material via email.
Balotelli getting punished for being stupid and irresponsible is fine in my eyes because he was exactly that, but it grinds my gears somewhat to see others who were very blatant in what they were saying not having equally quick action taken against them.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness
It doesn't take in context. That's my problem with it all.
He will be changed and banned, he will be sent on a patronising course to educate him and then all he will have learnt is not to bother with Social Media.
He said he made a mistake and apologised, I don't really see what more is to be said after that, and why the FA have jurisdiction over things posted on personal social media accounts. I guess he could be bringing the game into disrepute, but I'll argue that The FA do a good enough job themselves by letting clowns like Chillino and Hicks & Gillett own clubs.
He will be banned and as per the letter of the law it's correct. But it's a law that needs context and some intelligence applied to it.
