Most of the male commentators are absolutely ****e but it’s unlikely you would hear people using their gender to describe them, ie ‘these male commentators are ****e’.

The fact that gender is being used as a descriptor for women commentators when you wouldn’t do the same for their male counterparts is what you need to be aware of.

You can concentrate on "gender" and I will concentrate on "quality" & who is best suited for the position. This type of thing is a much wider conversation and I don't believe the there should be "x" amount of such and such in every job. If you are adequately qualified for a job and are best suited for the position.. then good for you. The likes of Gabby Logan and Kelly Dalglish have been on the tv for years and I have never really heard much about them being a "female commentator or pundit". They simply are really good at what they do and people like that, it's good viewing.

Ultimately football fans want to hear good footballing knowledge and for pundits or panelists to break down the game and point out things we don't know or just be generally entertaining. We've all been critical of many male pundits in the past, ripping them a new in fact so it's not one sided either. Richards, Jenas, Hamann, Carra, Neville have all got torrents of abuse on here, nothing to do with them being dudes, just because of stupid **** they have said. Women pundits/commentators etc are more prevalent on the tv now than they ever were and they should be subject to the same criticism the rest of the pundits/panelists/commentators.

No player has ever won the World Cup, Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup,world club, uefa super cup and League Cup.

If Netherlands win Van Dijk would become the first.

If Brazil win Alisson and Fabinho would become the first.

If England win Trent and Henderson would become the first.

Do you think it's ok to use a gender as a descriptor when refering to female commentators but not male commentators?

Doesn't sound very equal to me.

                    It’s not that simple.

Even if it were as clear cut as you say these women are operating in an environment that has been dominated by men since football was televised. Their comfort within the surroundings will not be absolute. You can always find another male ex pro willing to offer an opinion the pool of women who have spent a career within the game is smaller - so it is fantastic to see women being given parity when offering an opinion on such a big stage, quality is irrelevant and I am pretty sure is not the issue you suggest it is.

Change sex for race, would it be ok to slaughter the first black football presenter who was broadcasting at a World Cup if they seemed to less comfortable breaking through that barrier? Or the first woman to vote ‘what would she know’?. As soon as women break into a male dominated environment they are written off in exactly the way you are doing here. Change has to start somewhere and I am all for it.

Women have had to fight upwards across society and throughout history it is the instant put down that stops women progressing as men would from the second they begin to break through.

Yeah that's a pretty good summary

I think it's really just an example of everyday unconscious bias. I read somewhere that it's hardwired into our brains as an evolutionary survival mechanism, recognising/being aware when we do it is the first step to fixing it.

Yeah well said. It started over here with T20 cricket with the women’s game & it seemed weird at first but they all feel more comfortable ow & are doing a great job. Same with our Womens AFL footy team.
