I do get amazed at some of the criticism levelled at him on internet forums and I wonder if much of it is more to do with the Chelsea debacle x 2 than his performances.

Steven Gerrard is, in my opinion, only second in my lifetime to King Kenny.

Seriously though, a player with his ability really ought to have a greater influence on things against the bigger teams.

Howard - Mine too. He just about edges Kenny out. But it's close. Souness's talent and his influence is hard to describe to anyone who never saw him play for Liverpool. He RAN the midfield. He ATE every other midfielder who was supposed to have any talent in his era (e.g. Hoddle, etc). Souness was as influential as Keane, but had much, much more talent.

As for Steive, loads of times last night either Carra or Agger comming out of defense with the ball and he had his back to them, they had only Alonso or Riise as an outlet so many times.

My gripe is Stevie does it for us when we're down and out, but if we bossed the games we shouldn't be in that position.
Think is was in the echo Stevie likes being the hero, gladiator type to rescue us. And in thoose games we're throwing everything forward

Against the top teams he does seem to be positionally nieve re the day to day job required in midfield.
His running onto the ball in opo penalty box is his speciality and the 100mpg charge back to get a last minute tackle in.
So in big games for me he has to be given a free role.

I agree that Souness v Gerrard has Souness come out on top. But Kenny is still my hero and I don't think anyone will knock him off his perch for me.

Neil, appreciate your intervention. Hindsight being the wonderful thing that it is makes me realise that I should have constructed a better form of debate in response.

I have been guilty of replying to the post knowing the poster's history of being something of a blert - on two successive forums.

But on the other hand it is often difficult nay impossible to pick out the well thought out, well reasoned points he makes because he disguises them so well amongst the totally opposite posts.

There was another thread the other day on the same subject where he accused our skipper of going missing, and me and several other posters debated the point with him and he didn't come back with any replies!

I've noticed that some are lamenting the lack of contstructed debate on here, but as a reasonable newbie, they are not so bad as some would think - imho of course.

Yep there are insults and sniping but that happens at the game and in the pub.

As long as the insults are not that personal and that OTT then its fine with me. Some of the one-liners are comical in themselves. Freedom of speech works both ways remember.

Anyway, Gerrard not fit to be captain or going missing in big games? Well as I've said in a previous thread, Istanbul and Cardiff are just two examples of where he wasn't missing on the largest of stages. He cannot be the standout player on every occasion and perhaps is becoming a victim of his own success that we think he should pull us kicking and screaming back in every game where we are not performing at full pelt.
