We had no right to enter the 2005/6 champions league as our FA didn't pick us to represent them.
We relied on a rule change to get our way.

Sounds like you didn't want us to defend our CL trophy mate.

The rule was an ass. We were let in because we were the Champions.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

But the rule needed changing because it was laughable and made a mockery of the competition.

Of course I wanted us to defend the trophy.

Whether you like it or not, we relied on a rule change by UEFA to compete and I was embarrassed that we have to sink so low.

Entry to the Champion league (before 2006/7) was completely decided by the respective national authorities. It was up to The spanish FA to choose Madrid over Zaragoza.
Our FA had the chance to do the same, but it refused, choosing Everton over LFC.
2005/6 was the first time that any nation had 5 representatives.
But that is still the first example of a team winning the Champions League but not finishing in the qualifying places. The Spanish FA allowed them in because they were Real Madrid and no one cares about Real Zaragoza.
The English FA (rightly) didn't do the same. But when the matter went to UEFA they took the Spanish matter into consideration.
They ended up making the right decision.
Alright it wasn't an exact precident, but it certainly had an effect on the matter.
Dreams come true. Without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them.

My son Foster is a fan of soccer. He was a goaltender. His brother was a defenseman.

Would you be saying the same if it was Everton or Man Utd who asked UEFA for a rule change.
I don't like the rule either, but it was there.

Well you're wrong to be embarrassed. UEFA should've been embarrassed at their ludicrous rule. Now it's changed, it's right and proper and order is restored.

                          Yes.

The whole point of sport is to win and then defend your title. Regardless of who’d won it, not being able to defend it the next year would have made a complete and utter mockery of the sport and the competition.

It pains me to see our great club to have to rely on rule changes. We're better than that.

Being English, I believe in fair play

No, we relied on the greatest miracle ever to unfold on a football pitch.

You couldn't rightly let in Everton over us after that. (How long exactly did they last in the Champions League by the way? )

Some rules are there to be broken.
