Carra and Gerrard want Owen back but not Rafa

Liverpool stars want Rafa over-ruled on Owen bid
    tribalfooball.com - May 28, 2007

Senior Liverpool stars Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher have asked club owner George Gillett to bring Michael Owen back from Newcastle United this summer.

The Telegraph says Gillett and Tom Hicks are keen but Rafa Benitez, the Liverpool manager, is less enthusiastic and any deal is unlikely.

The desire of Gerrard and Carragher to restore Owen to the Liverpool fold is hardly a secret. Both have talked openly about their admiration for Owen. All three came through the Academy ranks and remain good mates, despite Owen having left Anfield for Real Madrid and now Newcastle United.

This is more than friends wanting to be re-united. Owen is the type of serial finisher Liverpool are crying out for; their lack of a cutting edge was highlighted during last week's European Cup final defeat to AC Milan.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

If Rafa doesn't want him, we won't sign him. If we were to go above Rafa and sign Owen, Rafa would be gone quicker than you could say "AFII loves ladyboys".

No, at Valencia the board decided more or less every signing. Rafa is the one who decides who we will sign and sell now as it should be.

If Rafa doesn't want to sign Owen then we won't sign him whatever Hicks, Gillett, Gerrard and Carra says about it.

Owen seems the most plausible signing out of all the 'big' names linked - surely Rafa would be interested at 9 million, but the only concern would be his injury record.

I hope we land Tevez, but if not I would be happy with Owen. He would be very effective with Crouch IMO.

Do we know he would be available for £9m - I suspect that Newcastle would want their money back and even if we negotiated them doen I feel that £9m is a lot of money for a player who in the last few years has suffered a sucession of injuries and used to rely on his pace. I'm far from convinced that he is the ideal type of forward for the way Rafa likes to play.

I agree though he would link up well with Crouch - If he has the pace of old. I wouldn't be unhappy if he came back of itself but I do think we would be down to Rafas fourth or fifth choice if it happens which would be very disappointing.

Exactly. This article shouldn't have been quoted here in the first place.

Mate, Owen will not offer us anything ! Apart from goals, he brings **** **** to a team ... Even then, his goals aren't guaranteed as he may never be the same player.

I can't see Owen signing for us when Rafa is in charge. Even afterwards he would be too old and past it completely.
